136th Preakness Stakes up next: May 21st

I didn’t think there was any way Shackleford had a chance after the way he blew up before the race, or that Animal Kingdom had a chance of getting through traffic coming around the far turn. Both horses made a believer out of me today!

I sure hope they take Animal Kingdom on to the Belmont. He’s going to be hard to beat at a mile and a half.

What a great race! It would have even been more great if Animal Kingdom had won, but still an excellent race!! His jockey had to thread so many needles just to get him where he could run in the home stretch.

Congrats to both Animal Kindgom and Shackleford and their jockeys!

I kind of doubt they will run him at Belmont now, given that they weren’t crazy about wheeling back in two weeks for the Preakness. Winning the Belmont the Belmont only underlines the fact that he is a horse that likes distance, which does nothing for his stallion potential.

Will be interesting to see what they do with him now. Given both Irwin and Motion’s backgrounds, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him take a trip overseas. Most all the big dirt prizes between now and Oct are at 9f, a distance he seems very vurnerable at.

I completely agree.

I have never been so depressed to have a winning ticket in my life. I was so hoping for a Triple Crown winner.

I had the opposite feeling. When I saw Shakleford, I thought he was ready to go. I commented to my DH that he looked very powerful. I am sad that we do not have a TC contender but I just did not think Animal Kiingdom had it in him. Maybe next year!

When I saw Shackleford act up I figured he was toast.

Shows me how much I know about horses! He ran a great race. Too bad about Animal Kingdom, but it was a terrific race. I was yelling so loud the dogs jumped up and ran outside.

Except the Travers - 1&1/4, and if he returns to the turf they could consider The Man O’ War, Sword Dancer, United Nations. And I don’t think he’s that vulnerable - JR said he missed the start & was too far back so got dirt in his face. Plus he did have a wall to work around again, & did pretty well…

But you’re right - first thing they’ll most likely do is just give him a breather…
unless he’s knocking down the stall door in 3 weeks.

Hopefully all are fine in the morning.

I hope you were just reflecting on the fact that most thoroughbred breeders are just breeding for the market and not for the sake of the breed. Otherwise this is a pretty incredible statement to make that proving he is a distance horse does nothing for stallion potential. Hopefully it was just a cynical remark because that is crazy.

I’m sorry - Congrats to Shackleford, but another very bad year for the Triple Crown series & Thoroughbred horse racing. The general public just yawns.

On the upside, no one got hurt.

It’s actually Shackleford I doubt we’ll see at Belmont (or at least see anywhere near the lead at the wire.) He hung on for dear life here and in the Derby he burned out well before the wire. Animal Kingdom–they’ll probably see (as the trainer predicted to media this was too soon to see the horse improve but with three weeks for the Belmont he’d show improvement.)

I hit Shackleford today. Fell in love with him his last two races when he was so game. Was at the races last night and they were taking advance bets so I threw some $$ his way. My dad was also there and telling me what a bad bet it was. I lost my voice slightly screaming as he came down the lane. He broke very poorly too (regardless of Gary Stevens saying he got a “clean break.” HELLO!) I really think he has a shot to be champion 3YO. Not too shabby for a horse who was 60-something/1 two races back!

I am really liking Larry Collmus as announcer.

Not sorry Animal Kingdom didn’t get there as I revere the TC and can’t stomach his owner. He is an idiot. You really wanted a guy spouting what he does to win the TC?

What, he called a spade a spade. I completely believe there are trainers that lie, especially by omission. Plus I’d rather have a horse who isn’t another speed-bred fat sales yearling, and a trainer who doesn’t believe in shooting up as the solution to everything. (I’ll be perfectly happy if the bill banning race-day meds passes. Next stop banning most of the crap they pump into show horses…) FAR better he win than garbage like Big Brown. And if/when Animal Kingdom goes to stud I’d send a mare to him ten times before I’d send one I didn’t like to a horse like ArchArchArch–why on earth breed that? Nothing special in the bloodlines and glass ankles.

He said on national TV he wants to get the FBI involved in regulation. Yeah, THAT’S great for the sport.

I would love to see AK in the Belmont and see what kind of campaign they put together for the rest of the year. iF and when he goes to stud it would help to introduce some NEW blood and distance blood to the already saturated gene pool. He is a game horse. Alydar didn’t win any TC races but he was an awesome sire. AK is bred more for distance then most of the horses that show up. If 10f is what he likes why wouldn’t he run on the BC Classic? MAybe they would take him to Dubai?
I can only guess that the distance may not be a problem he just had a lot of traffic to get around…I like this horse.
His owner is outspoken. So what, did he say anything that isn’t true? Or is there no transparency? If the sport won’t regulate itself someone has to…otherwise it is cheating…

Slew’s right. He’s a moron.

So you do not like the owner so the horse is bad? Is it because he wants to race clean? A lot of people didn’t like Jess Jackson either but he was very good for racing…
Will someone please start a thread on the Belmont? It is interesting that the top 2 finishers were both in the KD and not"fresh" horses…

And the top two finishers will NOT be in the Belmont. JMNSHO

Video: 136th Preakness Stakes - as called by Pimlico’s Dave Rodman

Looks like the perfect weather and Keagasus paid off for Magna and Pimlico although intoxicated people do not equal wagers. Still in a recession to land in the top 10 of all-time wagers is damn good

2011 Preakness attendance balloons 12.1% as handle dips 3.6%

The 107,398 who packed the Baltimore track for the second jewel of the Triple Crown was below crowds of about 112,000 to 121,000 for 2004 through 2008.

The attendance ranked sixth all time while handle checks in seventh on the all-time list with $76,376,689 wagered for the 13-race program.
