$15,000 vet bill - NOT my dog!!

I just wanted to take this at face value to be honest. It made my 8k bill last week feel okay.

Le sigh.

I’ve had 2 straight weeks of family events, get togethers…
Plus my own daily chores that 8 horses, 3 dogs, 3 chickens, the pigeons pooping on my hay, and the shrew running at large in my house create.
My first thought was you were referring to a mother-in-law, then I realized you probably meant a four legged vermin.:lol:
Yeah. Wow.

It was a nice story though…
Oh phooey, was a heartwarming one at the time though, but am sad that it may have been a fairy tale.

Oh, I dunno, a few things jumped out at me that seem to indicate a rich fantasy life. The labradoodle story was interesting, though it doesn’t necessarily mean anything with regard to this thread.

What I found most interesting was the odd bit of contradiction re: horse breeding.

Homebred, implying that she bred and raised the critter herself…

Possible second horse, eerily similar health problems to the 3 year old homebred though.

From a thread entitled “Breeding Newby!”:

From a thread entitled “Novice Breeder – considering breeding for the first time – help!”:

Now earlier we heard about a homebred, now she’s a first time breeder? With not one, but two broodmares?

From Nov. 3rd of that same year…

So now I’m really confused. First we had a 3 year old homebred, then we were a first time breeder, then, at the same time, we have a new foal.

There also seems to be quite a bit of catastrophic vet care happening…three year olds with hock problems, a horse with back problems, another with more hock problems, a labradoodle with multiple health problems, a cat undergoing chemo…

What does this have to do with this thread? Possibly nothing. Maybe I’m too cynical. Maybe the OP has a three year old homebred that she didn’t breed, a foal that she didn’t breed but named, two broodmares, and a show horse. Oh, and a show quality labradoodle.

If that’s the case, OP, I sincerely apologize and I wish you the best of luck with Ms. Money.
Oops, I had meant to quote this one, not the other…oh well.

I only just saw this. Judging by the OP’s disappearing act, I’m guessing those with doubts were correct. As I was reading, I was thinking, “It was agonal? And they got it back? Ruptured lungs? And it just needed a chest tube? Chest opened up to ‘fix’ the lungs, not once, but twice? Ruptured spleen…but wait, no…spleen’s fine? ‘Shattered’ humerus and pelvis?” Frankly, I’m surprised that no one questioned the validity of this story sooner. If it is true (and I’d bet dollars to donuts it’s not) I want the name and number of that emergency clinic. They’re workin’ miracles over there!

THANK you, JackieBlue. I did question it sooner, but didn’t want to be the only one jumping in front of the fast moving love train.

Don’t forget, after all that damage you described, they supposedly sent the dog home with her a few days after.

Makes me feel better for about to be a party pooper and say - if the dog had a pneumothorax it is likely (although not definite) that it could happen again. My dog also died of this - spent a lot of money in an emergency clinic, seemed to be better - died 8 weeks later.

I thought it was BS the second she said the $15k came from an inheritance of her husband’s. Well, my eyebrows were already up in my hairline but that pushed them over the edge.

Maybe I just don’t play nice with others, but if someone I was in a relationship in went and spent a $15k inheritance of mine on a stray dog without asking, I would consider that to be a Total D*ck Move. And there would be WWIII about it.

I am with you on this!!!

I don’t know, I am a heartless “you can’t save them all, use resources wisely” type. To me, $15,000 to “save” a dog by putting it through months of agonizing surgeries and pain just isn’t cool.

Reminds me of the time I was making the long drive back from LA and spotted something flopping in oncoming traffic. It was a dog, and I witnessed it get run over twice…. The drivers just kept on going… no one bothered to stop!!!

Well, I stopped, and stopped traffic, and got the badly injured dog out of the road. I took him over to a field and checked him out, he was still breathing but very shocky, and had broken limbs, and looked like a stray (no collar, dirty). I call 911, they tell me to call animal control, who then tells me to call the sheriff, because its after hours and they aren’t coming out.

As I am waiting a couple stops, a well dressed pair in a Cadillac SUV. The woman asks about the dog and starts immediately getting emotional. Asks me my assessment (the dog is badly injured and needs to be put out of its misery), starts crying, starts begging hubby… lets take him to the vet!!! Husband is giving me these (no no no eyes). Husband says, honey, we can’t keep a dog…. The vet can be very very expensive…

Any way, the sheriff finally arrives, tells the couple they can leave now, and dispatched the dog. That story didn’t end up in a 15K vet bill, and honestly, I didn’t feel bad about it. The dog’s suffering was cut short, rather than prolonged.

Hi everyone, sorry about the “disappearance”.

Its a long story, and cant spare too much details for the owners have some background issues with this.

I cant really discuss too much, as thereare lawyers involved. Owner contacted me in January, very thankful, happy and so glad to have her dog back. Very nice lady, who is going through a nasty divorce. Apparently the dog had been missing for months before I hit her, dog in my area, about a 3 hour drive from where this lady lives. Sketchy.

Apparently the x-husband wants the dog back, and the lady (where the dog has always lived) wants the dog - and theres a custody issue with the children as well.

Not the outcome I was hoping for- but dog is doing well considering, and I pray that she is able to stay with the lady owner.

No worries if there is no belief in the story, it makes me happy to know the owner was thankful for the decisions made. I dont know if I would or could do it again, but everything was so time sensitive I didnt have the time to think.

Sorry,I dont post here often, but read frequently. Saw this thread pop up again and owed an explanation.

Oh and the “homebred” was not bred by me, but the farm owner where I once boarded. Ziggy was also not bred by me, we purchased her in foal. The thoroughbred that had the potential back problems (as diagnosed by chiropractor, not vet) turned out to not have back problems, but had his hocks injected and he is semi retired but doing well  And of course my silly doodle is doing great and no UTI’s.

What is the name of the clinic you took her to. Seriously. If they did what you say they did they NEED to be in my rolodex.

Based on a previous thread I think I know the “area” where you are located - and only 3 hospitals in the entire area within 24 hour drives have those capabilities. If I PM you the names of the hospitals could you confirm if one of them was the hospital you took her too? I understand with it being so involved now that you cant post it publically. I would be interested to know though, as I work at a hospital and we have had similar (although not this exact one) happen.

Sigh…
DH once bailed a friend (who’d done a truly stooooopid thing) out of jail to the tune of $30K of refi funds we’d gotten to rehab our rental apartment.
Without asking me (he knew I’d probably have nixed the idea).

Did I want to kill him? Yes.

But on 2nd thought I realized he had done it shooting from the heart and friend truly needed that rescue.
We did get the funds back 6mos later.
TG friend did not skip his court appearance.

I don’t know or care if the OPs tale is fiction or fact.
In the end it’s the interwebz & we are all free to read, speculate, praise or damn as necessary.

Why can’t she post it publicly? This is a hospital that performed and succeeded with some pretty amazing heroics. I can’t imagine why anyone would want to keep such a thing a secret and owning an animal hospital, as our family does, I know they would appreciate the publicity.

I’m w/you, JBlue.

OMG you are a Angel… If only the world had more like you… or more that would even try. Congrats on your wonderful new family member.

I was following this thread back when it started and I have to say I was a bit skeptical and thought to myself…“I dont think I could ever do this” and was even feeling a touch guilty…Like, she’s a better person than I am!

…I just now scrolled through the 5 pages that I never got to read…Im not seeing any pictures but I may have missed them.

Did the OP ever post the promised pictures?

I think the owners emerged and are embroiled in a nasty divorce and want the dog back!
