200 Neglected Horses in MS?

And funny that this person on FB, who is trying to sell the remaining horses for $ 50 a pop, has the same last name as the “horse owner”:

Tori Smith Earls Alisha - please feel free to help in any capacity you wish, however, I really am not interested in publicly trying to crucify someone. These horses are available for adoption for anyone that would like to help them that completes the necessary paperwork. You’re welcomed to your judgement, but not on my page. We’re working as hard as possible to not close lines of communication between these horses and people willing to help them. Anyone can contact myself, or Renee Marie Paxton for adoption arrangements.

The same person who posted what I put in the OP yesterday.
Here it is again:

Tori Smith Earls

I have spoken with the young man that has taken these horses in off of a kill truck, when the kill plant wouldn’t even take them nearly a year ago. There are no photos of the feed or hay on the place, though it is there. Every horse has been given de-wormer, and has been given medical treatment to the best of his ability. Is he overwhelmed, yes, was it intentional, NO. MOST of the horses have gained a great deal of weight as they ALL looked like these photos when they arrived in his care. (including some already dead, he unloaded them anyway - those that died are being buried) There is approximately 80 head of horses, mules and donkeys, not 200. He has agreed to offer anyone with the proven ability and means the opportunity to adopt a horse for $50, which will cover only a portion of what he has spent to try to rehabilitate horses he’s received in deplorable condition. Anyone that wishes to donate to the continued rehabilitation or to adopt one of these horses may contact me for further information. I BEG you before assuming the worst, know there is always two sides to a story and horse rescue is an extremely expensive and thankless job. If you’re not willing to help or adopt a horse, please don’t comment. It’s a difficult position to stand in for everyone involved, but we can HELP… that is the bottom line.

Someone start listing who we should be calling. TIA

Good updates and links to the media coverage so far.

And again, mention of the connection of this Tori person to the horse abuser.

“Yesterday I made him bury the horses,” Jones said.
Jones said in the time that he was on the land with the Board of Animal Health and a local veterinarian, they determined that the animals still left on the land were doing alright.

“The doctors think these horses are okay. There was one that needed a little medical attention, but the rest of them are just old,” he said. “If the Board of Animal Health is satisfied and the vet here is satisfied, then I’m satisfied.”

Jones said based on the word of the doctors, there’s not a reason to charge the horse owner at this point, but that the case is still under investigation.[/QUOTE]

Where is the smoke coming out of my ears icon?!?

This is such BULLSHIT!

Oh you know, starve, neglect, maim your horses - its just fine.

Locally, we had a “hoarder” of sorts. Best that anyone could tell he was collecting horses to send to auctions or kill buyers (claimed the unbroke, skinny, and many pregnant horses would be sold to the “rodeo”).

Animal control kept doing nothing even though half of the herd was a rack of bones (but not DEAD like these ones - jesus!!) - kept insisting that the horses were “fine”.

Well, it took outraged horsewoman for something to happen. They got the news vans out. They called and wrote letters. They PICKETED in front of the AC head quarters - and that is what it took!

Their non stop pressure got the DA involved. And quickly the owner was charged with abuse (after animal control turned a blind eye for YEARS). All of the horses (40+) were seized. And now the owner is sitting in jail (can’t post the large bond).

More often than not, the “authorities” will DO NOTHING in the face on horrendous abuse and neglect.

It took a lot of pressure to get things done in Northern California - I can’t imagine the obstacles in Mississippi.

Trouble is, you’re IN Mississippi. Which isn’t exactly Devon, PA. It happens to be officially the state with the most poverty, lowest incomes, lowest standard of living and education levels. Where I’m very sure horses are considered “livestock” even in the eyes of the vets. Meaning, if not staggering around in a condition requiring immediate destruction, they’re “probably OK.”

I seriously doubt the standards there include dental inspections, custom-designed separate feeding programs for each Old Horse, primarily of enormous quantities of Triple Crown Senior. To evaluate, troubleshoot, and rehabilitate that herd properly would probably cost $7,500.00 per month; and you KNOW that’s not gonna happen. Probably the best solution is to put the whole herd down, right here and now, get them buried or rendered and PROHIBIT this asshat from owning any more.

I am SO tired of the words, “Rescue,” “Adoption,” and all the rest; with the best of intentions, it’s become a dead-end sink-hole for people with mental illnesses to indulge their strange needs. BUY AND SELL horses legitimately already, and stop “enabling” these nutjobs by sending them “donations.”

Okay - I realize that Mississippi is “back woods” - but seriously, horses with festering wounds, and dying of starvation should not be “okay” in any county in this nation. It is bullshit. Course I think the way people get treated and live in some of these areas is ghastly as well. Doesn’t make it any more right.

And just because some may believe that inhumanely starving horses to death isn’t acceptable, it doesn’t mean that the only acceptable solution is to throw thousands of dollars at the animals.

I agree, if there are no resources available for these horses, they should be HUMANELY destroyed (being trapped in a feeder for days before being shot is not humane).

As for rescues, YOU may not support any rescue groups. YOU might think that they are all “dead-end sink-hole for people with mental illnesses to indulge their strange needs” but I assure you not all are.

The recent local case I described above took a large number of the neglected horses. No, they did not invest millions in fancy vet care. They did float the teeth for the ones that needed it. They did deworm the horses, and they did give them free choice hay (no triple crown feeds  ).

And guess what? The horses have recovered at an astonishing rate. Sure, some think they are just live stock, and didn’t deserve anything more than suffering and torment. But these horses are recovering nicely, and a number already have adopters.

And not only did the rescue group save their lives, they retained an attorney to see to it that the owner will be punished for their crimes, and are lobbying for laws to change so that horses can be better protected.

Let me apologize if I appeared to be painting all “rescue” groups with a broad brush. You’ve been on COTH long enough to know the difference between the legitimate ones and the “hoarders” and sickos we’re discussing. I do not consider sites like “GoFundMe” and this FB phenom a positive development when people like this can extract money from the soft-hearted and innocent to maintain animals they should not own in misery.

THE ULTIMATE RESPONSIBILITY STILL LIES WITH THE OWNERS WHO SOLD THESE HORSES INTO THIS SITUATION TO BEGIN WITH.

So - are you going by the thought that this hoarder that neglected the horses had “rescued them from slaughter”? If that is what you are getting at, I agree, hog wash. But I also do not agree for a moment that this is a “rescue” (I doubt they have a 501C) - thats just a cover up.

And as for Facebook - good and bad. Yes, nuts can ask for money. And gullible people will send it. But a lot of good can come from FB as well.

Our local case festered for YEARS (complete with bones turning up). It wasn’t until a facebook page was made, and the outrage spread that the “officials” were forced to do something.

Same with the “Monica Thors” case (see other threads). Case festered for at least a year - wasn’t until FaceBook outrage spread - that the officials were finally forced to take action.

I cannot reach the Facebook page? I could earlier. I called the Sheriff’s office. Now wanted to make the next calls & the FB page is no longer accessible when I click the link in post 21.

Jerry Earls is a real piece of work. According to Jerry Earls, God took those horses. He fully admits to leaving dead horses unburied for a good month. And the man still has not been charged with anything. Not even the lack of or (probable) improper burial.

Sickening. So if you lock a child in a house, and don’t feed them - and they die, I guess that is just “the Lord taking them” huh?

And this over grown sloth rides horses for a living?

What total bullshit - I wouldn’t last a moment in the south with this crap.

The “good Lord” took these horses -

No, a neglectful sorry excuse for a human caused these horses to die a suffering death.

Owner of neglected Copiah horses charged with livestock larceny in 2012
Therese Apel, The Clarion-Ledger 8:56 p.m. CST December 1, 2014

The owner of a herd of horses that were found allegedly malnourished and neglected, some dead, in Copiah County is still on probation from previous animal-related criminal charges.

Jerry Earls, 59, was convicted of larceny of livestock in Nov. 2012, according to the Copiah County Circuit Clerk’s office. He was indicted on two counts: one for stealing a bull, and one for stealing 20 cows and 21 calves. An order consolidated the two charges, and he pleaded guilty to grand larceny and paid $25,000 in restitution.

Earls was convicted on Nov. 13, 2012 and was released on probation on Dec. 5, 2012. His probation lasts through November 2015, according to the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

Sheriff Jones has declined to charge Jerry Earls with this current round of animal cruelty?

Is this the one you are looking for?:

Yes, thank you.

It sounds like they are not planning on charging the ass***. Ok, so who do we need to contact? Let get this ball rolling!

http://www.msnewsnow.com/story/27530661/dead-horses-who-were-the-customers-for-these-unwanted-animal

I did call the Sheriff Dept. They only way I can describe it, is the woman answering the phone was quick to become deflective.

I also called this newspaper to thank them for the great article. http://www.clarionledger.com/story/n...rses/19728495/

I too could use some actual guidance on where to call. Perhaps you Facebook folks can ask on FB & then let us know? TIA

In the Clarion Ledger newspaper article, Sheriff Jones said,

“The doctors think these horses are okay. There was one that needed a little medical attention, but the rest of them are just old,” he said. “If the Board of Animal Health is satisfied and the vet here is satisfied, then I’m satisfied.”

What kind of vet says it is okay to starve an old horse? And what a lie. I don’t believe for a minute that any vet inspected each horse and determined the age and condition. Twenty dead horses lying around, horrific injuries, infections, starvation… words fail me.

http://www.clarionledger.com/story/news/local/2014/12/01/copiah-county-horses/19728495/

It is my understanding, by the time the vet came out the dead horses that had been laying out there for a good month, were suddenly disappeared. He was given heads up the authorities were coming. Good ol’ boy system.

Have you watched the videos?

This man a documented repeat offender!

BTW, Texas folks, a lot of the ALIVE horses disappeared to Texas w/o coggins papers!

This has hit Yahoo, though not front page. USA Today. It looks like the word is getting out!

Still hoping you FB’ers can ask & gain us guidance for contacts from the FB page.

Google “Copiah horses” & you will get far more news links than there are about Monica Thors. So I am hoping national outrage will help these horses too!

Maybe some “national outrage” at this point would put PAID to the filthy slaughter trade once and for all–even BEFORE the EU acts!
