Props to 19-yr old jockey Joe Talamo

Talamo to donate 25% of earnings if I Want Revenge wins Derby

Jockey Joe Talamo plans to donate 25% of his purse earnings to Children’s Hospital in New Orleans if I Want Revenge wins the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) on May 2 at Churchill Downs.

A Southern-California based rider who is a New Orleans native, Talamo said he made his pledge after learning that Children’s Hospital cares for all children, regardless of a family’s ability to pay for treatment.

hats off to Joe Talamo. Sure hope I Want Revenge wins. Saw IWR in the early races and he made a big impression on me.

I hope Silver City runs well tomorrow.

Looks like Quality Road’s Derby run is doubtful…

That bites! hoof specialist Ian McKinlay’s comments on QR’s 2nd crack:

"I saw Quality Road (Thursday) morning and that’s when we noticed the crack [in the right-front hoof]. I did him up with Animalintex (poultice), which draws out the infection. This morning, the crack was very clean. Obviously, he didn’t go to the track, so they tubbed him. They’ll dry him up and I’ll see him later this afternoon.

“It was a straight crack, with no infection. I really don’t think it is as serious as the other one [right-hind quarter crack]. If we were able to get right on top of it, I’ll probably lace it this afternoon. You have to remember that we are dealing with a living organism and it has a mind of its own. There is only so much we can do, and then we hope for the best. I’ll know more when I see him this afternoon, and Saturday morning will tell us a lot.”

Oh, and it’s going to be a miracle if the Derby doesn’t ruin Square Eddie.
With all due respect, unless you have some insider information that has yet to be shared, this is not a fair statement. There are all sorts of reasons to suspect he may not perform well, but there are also reasons to suspect that he may start to peak (2nd start of the layoff, for example). Doug O’Neill is pretty good at bringing them back from layoffs. Saying he knows he’s ruining the horse is absurd.

… and speaking of Joe - the Paulick Report cited this gem of a ride by Talamo yesterday at Hollywood Park: Youtube: Race 7 $50k allowance on turf @ 1 1/16mi; with Vic Stauffer making the call

Mr Fantasy won solidly the Grade 3, $150,000 Withers Stakes at Belmont by 1 3/4 lengths over This One’s For Phil. Will he go to the Preakness? His connections are saying for sure as he doesn’t appear to deal well with a lot of distractions. 100,000+ at Old Hilltop could easily make him come unglued.

Quality Road jogged 1 3/4 miles at Belmont Park on Saturday morning without issue.

After watching Quality Road train Saturday, trainer Jimmy Jerkens - a self-described pessimist by nature - said he was “pretty confident” Quality Road would make the Derby.

Quality Road, who had just gotten over having a quarter crack on his right hind foot, was diagnosed with this new quarter crack Thursday. After getting a day off Friday, Quality Road was sound enough to jog Saturday, something he did with energy as he attempted at times to break into a gallop under exercise rider Juan Moreno.

Also likely going to the Preakness Stakes - $112,00 Derby Trial (G3) winner Hull by 4-lengths.

Paulic Report provided Churchill Downs list of graded stakes winners as of April 19, 2009

Sitting at 21st* - and unable to get in unless a drop out before Wednesday’s cutoff - will be Summer Bird with $100k in graded vs. #20 Mr Hot Stuff with $114,000 in graded money.

*Mr Fantasy is listed at #33 on the above list with $25k; however with his win in the Grade 3 Withers Sat 4-25 added an additional $90k making his tally $115k which is good for 20th but he is not going to the Derby, at the moment

Giant Oak is not expected to go, meaning that Summer Bird will liely get in.

QR: skipping Derby

No Quality Road - he won’t go to the Derby

Expected to be among the favorites, Quality Road missed a final workout Monday morning at Belmont Park and was declared out of Saturday’s Run for the Roses by trainer Jimmy Jerkens.

“We couldn’t train him so we decided we couldn’t run him,” Jerkens said. “He just isn’t sound enough.”

Quality Road developed a quarter crack on his right hind foot late last week, and missed significant training. He galloped Sunday on Belmont’s training track, and Jerkens found a spot of blood on the newly patched crack.

On Monday morning, Jerkens noticed the colt’s foot was sore and that he was favoring it.

Oy - that sucks for Quality Road’s connections. But many props to them for taking care of the horse. That’s a true horseman.

As Texarkana cited under the “Rachel Alexandra” thread - there was an ugly wreck at Churchill Downs this morning (Apr 27) during the workouts

DRF 4-27-09 “Deadly accident amid busy slate of workouts”

The accident occurred shortly after the midmorning renovation break. Friesan Fire, who sped five furlongs in 57.86 seconds, and Pioneerof the Nile, who went five furlongs in 1:00.87, had already completed their works just before the accident, and both Chocolate Candy (five furlongs, 59.24 seconds) and Join in the Dance (five furlongs, 1:00.20) were able to finish their drills while hugging the rail, avoiding the carnage near the outside fence just inside the sixteenth pole.

After a 25-minute delay to clear the two stricken horses from the track, workouts resumed, including that of Rachel Alexandra, who looked sensational during a four-furlong drill in 46.43 seconds.

Derby horses Flying Private (four furlongs, 47.40 seconds) and Win Willy (five furlongs, 1:02.40) also worked before the accident. Take the Points (five furlongs, 1:00.06) and Mine That Bird (five furlongs, 1:02.60) worked after the accident, as did Oaks candidate Flying Spur (four furlongs, 48.54 seconds).

Accident: Dr. Rap, a 3-year-old colt trained by David Carroll, and Raspberry Kiss, a 2-year-old filly trained by Ken McPeek. Dr Rap doing gate work, dropped rider and ran head long into an unsuspecting Raspberry Kiss. Euthanized was Raspberry Kiss :frowning: and her rider may have a broken foot. Dr Rap survived - for now:

Dr. Rap was being evaluated at Hagyard-Davidson, Carroll said.

“It’s his right shoulder,” Carroll said. “He either has a hairline fracture, nerve damage, or a severe bone bruise. If they say he’ll never race again but can be a show horse, I’ll take that.”

With Quality Road gone, John Velazquez climbs aboard Mr Hot Stuff

JV has never been on the horse before.

As cited above, Friesan Fire was among the many working Monday morning with some very impressive numbers: five furlongs in :57.80

Friesan Fire’s workout is similar to the work trainer Larry Jones gave Hard Spun during the Derby week two years ago. The eventual runner-up to champion Street Sense in the 2007 Derby went five furlongs in :57.53 in his final move before the classic.

What Friesan Fire’s impressive time doesn’t tell you is that he slowed dramatically on the gallop out, unlike Rachel Alexandra or Pioneer of the Nile who were ready to go around again.

Just food for thought…

If you are looking for some blunt (if not harsh) comments in regards to some of the runners try Ed McNamara of NY Newsday - April 27, 2009 “Horse-by-horse breakdown of Derby entrants”

Sampling:

Advice: Pulled a 15-1 upset in the 1 1/16-mile Lexington on Keeneland’s Polytrack after a dud on dirt at minor-league Sunland Park. He’s in way over his head.

Mine That Bird: Back-to-back losses at New Mexico’s Sunland Park hardly qualify him for the Derby. No figures, no hope; please stay in the barn.

Summer Bird: Deep closer got up for third at big odds in the Arkansas Derby in his third career start. So why not bring him along gradually instead of rushing him into a grueling test where he appears to be way over his head?

Win Willy: Closer’s claim to fame was that 56-1 shocker in the Rebel at Oaklawn, when a blazing pace dropped the race in his lap. He finished well for fourth in the Arkansas Derby, but that won’t convince me to risk money on him.

Texarkana - I saw the feedback too on FF in regards to his effort this morning. Very swift, but with little in the tank after that. It worked with Hard Spun in his training method and I’m sure Larry Jones isn’t changing what has been perfect to date with FF.

You can’t say the NBC Networks aren’t trying hard hard to get the word out that the race is on…

The race itself will be part of a three-hour show from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. EST Saturday, May 2 airing on the NBC network, but Derby segments can be seen on the Today show. The show will air live from Churchill Downs Friday, May 1, and on Derby Day. Also, the network’s Access Hollywood show will air Kentucky Derby-related segments in the week leading up to the race.

The NBC-owned Bravo network checks in with promos for the race featuring personalities from its Real Housewives and Top Chef shows all week as well. In addition, CNBC will air its documentary “Run for the Roses: The Kentucky Derby and the Business of Horse Racing” Thursday, April 30 at 9 p.m. EST with a repeat at 1 a.m. and additional airings Saturday, May 2–Monday, May 4. Bravo will televise the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) from 5 p.m.-6 p.m. EST.

NBC is attempting to get the Derby message out in less-traditional places as well. A three-minute piece on the race has been airing on American Airlines’ in-flight programming throughout April, potentially reaching five-million viewers. Derby spots are also running on screens in taxi cabs, universities, arenas, PATH train stations, and at gas pumps.

An interesting aside:

With the Oaks, for 3-year-old fillies, comes programming aimed at women, since the Kentucky Derby, along with the Summer and Winter Olympics, are the only major televised sporting events that draw more female than male viewers.

And don’t worry about any swine pandemic … the Derby will soldier on

Lexington Herald-Leader 4-27-09 “State officials say swine flu concerns shouldn’t impact Derby plans”

Hacker said Kentuckians should be concerned, but also should avoid panic, noting that much about the new virus remains unknown. But he also pointed out that regular, seasonal flu killed about 36,000 Americans this year, including almost 1,000 Kentuckians.

Now doesn’t that make you feel better? Or is it bettor with a win, place and show

Square Eddie out of Derby

The list is getting shorter and shorter.

“There was a little heat in his left shin,” O’Neill said outside Barn 17 Tuesday morning. "He’s walking sound and looks fine, but we decided to err on the side of caution. It’s extremely disappointing. If the race were a month from now it would be a different story.

“I had a lengthy conversation with Paul Reddam yesterday and he decided it was best,” O’Neill said.
