So how do they split the purse? Half of 1st and 2nd shares combined?

An aside, lost in the focus on the winners in the Travers: jockey Jose Lezcano has gotten off Street Life, who will be vanned off.

From assorted tweets:

#Rick Dutrow Jr. said he watched Willy Beamin’s victory in the King’s Bishop from his favorite Chinese restaurant in Roslyn, N.Y

# Dr Celeste Kunz said issue for Street life is left front ankle. “Nothing obvious” being taken for x-rays

Oh, awful. He’s so handsome. Saw him earlier in the meet. Hope he’ll be okay.

Yep. They each get 40% of the purse and a Grade 1 win.

Historically speaking an interesting tid-bit:

In the 143 runnings of the Travers, the only other recorded dead-heat occurred in 1874 between Attila and Acrobat. In that instance, a run-off was held that was won by Attila.

Today’s attendance: 46,528

Update on Street Life

From this morning’s Washington Post:

“Street Life, pulled up after the wire by Jose Lezcano, was vanned off and later found to have a soft tissue injury in his left front pastern, according to trainer Chad Brown. It’s a non-life-threatening injury.”

Blood-Horse Daily: Alpha, Golden Ticket Dead

This was the subject line when I opened my email this morning, I guess the screen size was playing a trick on me. Glad I saw the race!

It was a completely thrilling race, was very glad I was home at the time to get to see it live. Congratulations to both sets of connections.

Of course, when I saw the title of the article on the Bloodhorse website “Saratoga Diaries, Canoe Issues” (regarding the traditional painting of the canoe in the Travers winner’s colors) my mind went into the gutter… Thanks COTH!

For those interesting in seeing all the SPA races (all 13) from Saturday’s Traver’s Day: Video - here you go! (approx 25 min)

The 18-min mark starts the King’s Bishop and Willy Beamin

Dutrow was at a loss to explain why he has been so successful bringing horses back on short rest. Willy Beamin also won the Mike Lee stakes earlier this summer four days after defeating allowance horses at Belmont Park.

“I can’t understand why it works and we don’t really care why it works but we’ll just keep doing it until someone tells me to stop,” said Dutrow. “It doesn’t work for all horses but it works for Willy.”

Dutrow said he’s not sure when or where Willy Beamin will run next but assured it won’t be any time this week.

“We can retire him now, right?,” said Dutrow with a laugh. “He doesn’t have to do any more. Mr. Riccio is a brilliant owner and he calls most of the shots with this horse. He’ll ask my opinion and I’ll give him an honest opinion and we’ll come up with something for him next.”

Today’ (SUN) big race is the $600,000, Personal Ensign Invitational (@ 1 1/8 mi) with Royal Delta.

I want to see this one, but will have to be content with the replay I suppose.:frowning:
I will be able to watch the Pacific Classic though!

Another WOW!

At the break It’s Tricky with a terrible stumble and having to scoop dirt in her face. Royal Delta was waaaaaay washed out in the post-parade which made you wonder why the public was backing her at 1-2. And thus plenty of room for the upset.

Huge props for It’s Tricky to still power-on after that start.

It’s Tricky was so game, I thought she might win it for awhile there! What a heart.

Yikes! Hope you had coffee in hand!

Me, too. I was rooting her home from my sofa. And looked to me like she was pulling the jockey through that spot on the rail! Another amazing Saratoga moment. Pletcher’s filly is nice, but I’d say It’s Tricky won everyone’s hearts.

Painting the Travers canoe - which sits on the pond in the infield - in the colors of the winning horse’s connections is a tradition born in 1961.

Because of this first-time dead heat it won’t be painted half-and-half, but rather there will be two Travers canoes. One with the green, purple and orange colors of Golden Ticket and the other blue and white of Alpha. It’s expected that tomorrow (8/28) NYRA have them in the water so no pictures yet. Also there will be two painted jockey statues near the paddock. Traditionally that is painted right after the race in the colors worn by the winning horse

Also in a first, the canoe of last year’s winner - Stay Thirsty - will be “given” to owner Mike Repole.

Repole said Sunday that he approached the New York Racing Association about the possibility of buying the boat that was painted in his blue and orange colors.

NYRA politely declined the offer, but said they would gladly give Repole the canoe for nothing if he would make donations to funds that benefit horse rescue and the backstretch. Repole said he would make a “substantial” donation to both.

The canoe, he said, is supposed to be his by the end of the meet.

The Stay Thirsty canoe will head to Long Island, maybe sit in Repole’s pool at a September house party. Next spring, it will be out in the backyard. Half of it will be used by his wife, who will grow flowers; the other half goes to his grandmother’s tomato plants.

“Let’s be honest, I’ll probably never win the Travers again,” Repole said. “Just seeing it will bring back plenty of memories.”

From SAT’s Travers Day races the Beyer Speed Figures for the respective winners:

Zagora 102 (Ballston Spa), Alpha/Golden Ticket 100 (Travers), Willy Beamin 97 (King’s Bishop), Contested (Test) 91.

Last published news on Street Life 8-27-12

Trainer Chad Brown said Sunday that Street Life, who was vanned off after finishing last in the Travers, will have an ultrasound procedure on his left front leg in the next few days.

Jockey Jose Lezcano jumped off Street Life right after the wire in the race after he felt the colt take a bad step.

“On the final turn, when he lost his position, Jose said he didn’t feel quite right when he went to his left lead,” Brown said Sunday morning. “When he came off the turn into the stretch, and went to his right lead, he said he felt better. After he crossed the wire, he stumbled a couple times and (Lezcano) thought the safe thing would be to pull him shortly after the wire and get off.”

Brown said he hopes the injury is not career-threatening, and the colt is in good shape right now.

“He is really comfortable in his stall, he’s happy,” Brown said. “He was comfortable and stable and happy with a couple hours after the race.”

An aside … not all Saratoga summer business is welcomed - Times Union 8-27: “Cops shut Spa escort service”

Customers looking to hire young, female escorts during the Saratoga track season found a reduced field because of recent action by the State Police

“This has devastated me,” said John. He said the State Police have accused him of promoting prostitution.

“All these women would tell you I treated them good,” he said. “They would tell you I never asked them to provide illegal services. The clients would tell you I never promised any illegal services.”

The business has been among a handful in the Capital Region that do brisk business during the horse racing season, but State Police essentially closed Lawless down without notifying the public as to why.

A simple tip … maybe he should change his name from “John” when denying the activities of his business

By the way who owned the Traver’s runners from this year? Rarely it seems to be mentioned the owner’s background save for a Repole or IEHA partnership situation. Example of one runner:

Liaison, owned by Arnold Zetcher: former chairman, president and CEO of Talbots Inc., the chain of women’s clothing stores.
