I did see O’Brien’s remarks in today Racing Post which contradict initial assumptions of all systems go with the Kentucky Derby.
“Lines Of Battle is also in the picture for Newmarket along with George Vancouver, Cristoforo Colombo and Pedro The Great. The picture about what we will run in the Guineas should be a bit clearer in about a week’s time.”
I have to concur on the remarks about the fillies and the KY Derby with the points. The races designed for Derby points are there and unrestricted. If an owner/trainer wanted their filly in the KY Derby they have to step up and earn the points. In 1980 Genuine Risk ran 3rd in the Wood Memorial against the boys which would’ve netted her 20-points.
If anything the points system appears to have largely eliminated the means of putting in a rabbit into the Derby …
Daisy Phipps tweeted this picture of Orb with Jen Patterson up early this morning (Sun) at Payson Park in the fog.
Per the DRF it was a great work: four furlongs and 1:00.81 for his very sharp-looking five-furlong gallop out around to a very visible seven-eighths pole.
“Each work he gets a little more mature,” said Patterson, who is also the regular exercise rider for the multiple Grade 1-winning turf horse Point of Entry. “He gets around to the pole then waits for me to ask him when to go. Then I’m just a passenger. The fog this morning was not an issue other than it kept everyone from seeing the whole breeze. For him and I, it didn’t bother us at all.”
As noted before - Vyjack’s trainer, “Rudy” Rodriguez isn’t licensed for Kentucky and without the license the horse cannot ship to Churchill Downs.
On Sunday, Rodriguez attempted to enter the 3-year-old filly Kelli Got Frosty in Thursday’s $100,000 Appalachian Stakes at Keeneland. According to Rodriguez, the entry was initially accepted by the Keeneland racing office. However, 30 minutes later, Rodriguez said he received a call that the entry was rejected. Keeneland officials confirmed Rodriguez’s story.
Rodriguez said a van taking Kelli Got Frosty had already left Aqueduct and he had to call the driver to tell him to return.
“That was kind of disappointing,” Rodriguez said Sunday afternoon from Fair Hill. “They said no trainer could go on the grounds if they don’t have a license.”
Meanwhile, if and when Rodriguez can ship Vyjack to Kentucky won’t be decided until Tuesday when Rodriguez meets with Kentucky racing officials.
Vyjack came out of his third-place finish in the April 6 Wood Memorial with a respiratory issue. A couple of days later he was vanned to Fair Hill, where he has spent about an hour a day for several days in a hyperbaric chamber.
Horses in a hyperbaric chamber breathe pure oxygen under pressure and it gets delivered to any damaged cells to help heal and repair the diseased or injured tissues.
Vyjack has also been training over the dirt surface at Fair Hill and will likely have a workout there late in the week or next weekend, Rodriguez said.

Garrett Gomez rode ‘Malice’ to 2nd place in the Blue Grass Stakes but has opted previously for Vyjack.
Now if you want to read into things WinStar asked fans for input on selecting a jockey for Derby contender Revolutionary. The choices they listed were: Rafael Bejarano, Calvin Borel, Julien Leparoux, Rosie Napravnik, or Mike Smith.
Well Mike is now riding Palace Malice, Rafael is riding Overanalyze, Julien is riding Java’s War, so that leaves just Calvin or Rosie. While Calvin won aboard WinStar’s Super Saver in 2010 … I wouldn’t be shocked (based upon her heavy success in 2012 thus far) if they opt with offering it to Rosie.
Either way it will be another spin of the revolving door of jockeys for the horse as Revolutionary will have his fourth different rider in seven career starts.
For those wondering: “Who else might appear on the scene late for Derby points?”
Well the Grade 3 $200k Coolmore Lexington is this Saturday at Keeneland. And then on Apr 27th is the G3 Cliff’s Edge Derby Trial at Churchill. These last two so-called Wild Card races don’t offer a lot of Derby points (20-8-4-2, respectively for finishers 1-4) but could make the difference I suppose.
Right now Keeneland has suggested the following are possible starters: Cerro, Examen, Hip Four Sixtynine, Johnny Handsome, Pick Of The Litter, Pure Fun, Taken By The Storm, Where’s Dominic and Winning Cause.
That said only Kenny McPeek trained Taken by the Storm would come into the race with any Derby Points (5) and a win vaults him to 25 which is good for 21st in the current Derby points standing.
There will be almost certainly some defections/injuries/reconsiderations which could open the door. Still I doubt we’ll see another “Don’t Get Mad” (2005) winner of the Cliff’s Edge Derby Trial getting the necessary points (it was graded money in his case) to be then wheeled back into the Kentucky Derby. DGM finished 4th in the Derby.
A Trial horse hasn’t won the Derby since Tim Tam in 1958.

In addition, there are a couple of horses above Charming Kitten – Super Ninety Nine and Falling Sky – who could defect, so the Lexington and Derby Trial results are unlikely to keep him out.
No Derby rider has yet been named for Charming Kitten. He was ridden in the Blue Grass by Joe Bravo, who won the Spiral on Derby starter Black Onyx. Joe is named to ride Black Onyx in the Kentucky Derby.

Frankly hope he does and she does. Thought he was finishing up very well at the end, and deserves to be there as much as the first two.

Tom Amoss and her were a highly successful trainer/jockey team at Fair Grounds. However I’m not sure if Mylute is more live of a mount in the Derby than Kitten would be. At least he’s not a bubble horse (Mylute is @ #16 with 42-points) so better to have a guaranteed ride.
Today (Tue 4/16) is Ruddy Rodriguez’s (“Vyjack”) appearance before the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission to secure a trainer’s license for Kentucky. Some of the tweets from the public meeting have shown the grilling against the former Dutrow assistant.

Dale Romans spoke (in person) before the Commission as a character reference for Rudy. Also speaking on his behalf but on the phone is NYRA board member Michael Dubb.
Rudy Rodriguez granted a KY License, but is required to have Vyjack under video surveillance at Churchill. No other horse (in the Derby) will be so required however it was Rudy who proposed/offered it and the KHRC took him up on it.

Erased was my posting on this weekend’s Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland worth 20-points towards the Derby but also the Oaks. It will be a field of 11 runners including a filly who is already eligible and in the Oaks.
The Lexington is worth 20 points to the winner toward eligibility into the May 4 Kentucky Derby.

I’m not sure if this following comment can be taken as real (the jockey not identified) with Rosie having crushed the Fair Grounds jockey standings nobody in the colony really would has ground to say a thing IMHO.
Some of her male competitors are less than charitable about the reasons for Napravnik’s success. “Look at me,” a veteran jockey was saying before a race in New Orleans last month. “I’m 53 years old, brother. I’m going to walk into a paddock, and I’m going to talk to these owners and their wives and stuff. And there’s little Rosie. She’s going to bounce out of there. A pretty little girl, good disposition. And she’s going to be talking all nice to them. Now, which one of them would you rather leg up on your horse?”
