2022 Maryland 5* at Fair Hill

Any idea when this study was done? I would LOVE to read it.

Then they designed a breastplate that is supposed to not interfere as much. Andrew Hoy uses it if you’re looking for photos.

I’m pretty sure she is riding in a myler combination bit. She has used the same bit on some other horses. It isn’t the Norton bit by looking at the noseband in the picture above. Elisa has used this same bit previously and it isn’t crazy harsh.

Of all riders, EW is one of the last riders to bit up on a horse, she is crazy strong and very soft in her hands with very tactful riding.

Fairfax did do a study on them. Andrew hoy is a sponsored rider for Fairfax. The idea is great but the fairfax breast plate is $400+ so a bit over priced, but there are now companies that make comparable designs. I just got one from correct connect. I have read the fairfax study and do think it should be taken into account with certain horses who are big/ broad shoulered or jump using there shoulders quite a bit. On other horses I don’t think it’s a huge huge issue for a regular breastplate/ 5 point breastplate- but they must be fitted correctly

That is a fine soapbox to stand on and I’m very happy to put mine alongside if there isn’t room for us both on top of your box.

I personally don’t count 2* as ā€œupper levelā€ as it equals our BE Novice. That is more ā€œmid-levelā€ and many good amateur riders easily run at that level. Times past, it was the level everyone started at.

To me, UL tends to mean professional riders with multiple horses, though we still have some top-notch amateur riders with one or two personal horses. To sustain their living, the professionals need an entire support team of highly skilled people to keep their horses in best possible condition. Only vets are legally permitted to treat an animal. Only a certified farrier can legally shoe a horse. The UL riders are closely observed by a very knowledgeable base of fans and amateur riders.

I THINK here, technically ā€œupper levelā€ is prelim and above. I know in my area once you hit prelim its a big thing, you’re ā€œofficiallyā€ upper level.

I know this thread is older now but I’m a RideIQ member and there is a podcast with Elisa Wallace talking about Maryland 5*, her horse and other past events. I’m not sure if you have to be a member or not to listen to the podcast.

You do not have to be a member! Such a good interview.

Thanks for the tip! I am listening to the most recent RideIQ interview with Danny Warrington on safety and it’s really interesting! Will definitely listen to more–I hadn’t before.
