2024 Olympics - Eventing

See, I’m of a different mind on this. I felt like the course was incredibly forgiving. No one looked undeserving to me, as they often have in years past.

I felt like the Czech combo that was pulled up was exactly correct, maybe even slightly erring on the side of overly cautious.

I feel like we’ve had medal-earning combinations look a whole lot scarier in years past than anyone looked today.

Maybe I’m just getting used to consuming so much XC media, though.

I watch about 3 major x-country events a year, so I will be the first to admit my perspective may be entirely incorrect

What I will say is YES, this is the first year I can recall where all horses and riders looked to be at the level the course asked. I can think of some other Olympics where I was really holding my breath for some that were overfaced. I am delighted to see we have talent that’s meeting the bar across a wide range of countries—and that the bar has been thoughtfully set.

Still on Ros person shown (a Rebecca Sherwood) put this pic on FB. Any thoughts on that view? I don’t event so not good on the rules and how they are applied!

Based off of my understanding of the interview with the course designer, this seems to be influenced by the open space he had to work with. There was a lot of galloping space, and subsequently, the designer didn’t need to design a tight, twisty, sharp course with highly technical questions to create a test for this level. You are not seeing an example of “show jumping” on the course.

I am definitely not an eventing Olympic aficionado. I was telling a friend that most years I have had to turn the coverage off for this very reason.

The few combinations that weren’t up to snuff got weeded out pretty uneventfully this year. The course was challenging enough to shake up the standings and catch some top pairs. But no one looked like they had to make super questionable decisions to be competitive, which I appreciate.

I really hate it when we reward recklessness.

I’m watching the E! channel rerun. The worst part is that the commentators never shut up.

My thanks to the posters who watched the early broadcast, it tells me what to look for. NBC has surfing and equestrian, at Noon central today. Another replay at 6 p.m. Central on USA network.

Monday 6 a.m. central for the jumping part of eventing on E!, and 8 p.m. for the jumping rerun on USA

It has to be 50% of the horse’s body outside the flags to incur the penalty. The horse is clear in this moment of the photo.

I’m sorry, I wandered off when it finished!

I’ve been going to cbc.ca, then click Paris 2024 top right. That brings you to the landing page for all events, both replays and live. I hope that works for you!!

You can also try this link, all the different equestrian sports should show up along the bottom (both replays and live for tomorrow am)

(dressage peep here who attends Kentucky 3day every year x13 years so bit of armchair)

So for my own understanding- they have to jump two rounds tomorrow? One for team and one for individual? Is that normal or new?
I feel like they usually look pretty donesy at Kentucky on Sunday. I mean, they look great and jump well but I can’t imagine asking another round. I think I recall one jump off but possibly I dreamt that.

Not all horses/riders will jump 2 rounds, but many may:

Round 1: All remaining team riders and individuals, including any substitutes, will jump in this round. In the first round, fences can be set up to 4* max height, which is 1.25m. This round will see anywhere from 11-13 numbered fences, with a maximum of 16 jumping efforts.

Round 2: The top 25 individual riders, regardless of nation/team, will move forward to the final individual round. Substitute riders cannot go forward to this round. This round can see fences up to 5* height, which is 1.30m. The number of fences decreases for a maximum of 9 fences and 12 jumping efforts.

I remember the first time the Japanese came to the U.S. to compete, maybe late 80’s or early 90’s?. They were going Intermediate at Shepley Hill, probably as a warm up for Ledyard. Back then, their positions were so formal and stiff I feared they would shatter into pieces if ever they fell off. It’s good to see they’ve overcome cultural influences.

It’s still not up. I’m bummed because the replay of the first section of dressage was already up while the last couple groups were going.

They must be editing madly. Not easy with a gazillion cameras, I understand.

Noon Central time today NBC will have equestrian, (and surfing).

I used to event years ago, but topped out at Prelim and switched to dressage. While I love the challenge and beauty of upper-level dressage done correctly and kindly, I still have moments of missing cross country and the culture of eventing. Professional dressage, as we’ve all seen this week, can be ugly.

So I eagerly nipped over to the Eventing forum this morning to catch up on the Olympics cross-country day. I’m relieved that the course seems to have ridden well with everyone home safe and sound. But what I REALLY wanted to come here and say is this: there is something really special about a group of people coming together from around the world, united by their love of horse sport, to cheer for, celebrate and commiserate with every single pair on course. I love reading comments like “Well done Sweden” and “Poor Poland.” This is what I remember from my time as an eventer :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I haven’t posted in the Chronicle forums for – easily – more than 10 years, but I was so struck by this that I just had to dust off my account to call it out

And now go for a gallop.

I just read on FB that Bruno lost a shoe on course. I hope he has good enough feet that his shoeless foot did not get bruised and he passes the jog tomorrow. Apparently, he lost it late on the course so hopefully he will be fine.

I’m not sure any horse came home with all their shoes at Kentucky… I’m joking, but not really.

I bet they’ll have him in tip top shape.
