Thank you! I get so tired of city girls singing “get along, little doggies”!

The way he was headed, he could have hit the Oklahoma panhandle by now, which is next to Colorado and does have some pretty serious mountains just west of it.

Those of you who know this area, does this video Knucklehead posted of “Oklahoma” seem likely? I was just looking at the map, and noticed how very close the panhandle is to Raton Pass, which I remember as being pretty hairy.

And Opal, Wyoming, looks pretty much like the “Oklahoma” footage, although I believe the vegetation could be different and I don’t remember what the mountains look like from around there. It’s springtime, so vegetation is green and mountains have more snow cover, so distinctively different from how we see them the rest of the year.

That whole arid-land-east-of-the-Rockies geography extends across several states.

The latest update is that the suspicions are N CO/WY and they think they found the exact mountains in N CO.

I’m impressed by the amount of sleuthing going on! I’d say those ranges look pretty close to each other, and it would make sense that a few days ago he stopped at a state park in CO to get some footage before being dropped off in WY to continue his journey.

ETA:

He also posted this update that he is in fact in WY 9hr ago and will update soon.

"It’s always been about the journey.
Improvise. Adapt. Overcome. Repeat.
In WY now. Update coming."

Can’t wait to hear his update about having to get trailered out due to harassment or something.

I think he is a scammer, but I personally am happy that he is being trailered about from photo op to photo op. That will mean the horses are not getting worked into the ground and maybe actually get some rest and feed.

This 100%.

We all know trailering can be hard but it’s not nearly as hard as being ridden to death & surviving on ditch grass and broken feed bags when he can get them.

So he’s trying to rationalize his trailer hopping with, " It’s always been about the journey.
Improvise. Adapt. Overcome…

I call BS. He “improvised” because he finally came to the realization that his “journey” was poorly planned and destined to fail. He has “adapted” by quietly being trailered over expanses of challenging territory. The only thing he’s hoping to “overcome” is public humiliation.

The good news: The horses are getting a break in the trailer.

I foresee him being trailered to a park or another bucolic setting just outside of Seattle under the cloak of darkness. Then he’ll ride toward the Seattle skyline, with the steely eyed expression of Cowboy Determination, as if he’s ridden the last 100 miles. There will be an insipid soundtrack to his profound pronouncement of what the “journey” has taught him about facing the adversity of the open road and the cynicism of social media , blahblahblah. The End.

:arrow_right: If anyone knows how to contact Netflix in order to express my concerns about producing any sort of program documenting this nitwit’s travels, I’d appreciate it.

The questions still stand on how and what he is going to do once he gets to Seattle. He claimed earlier (I am sure there is a record of it all over TT and IG) that he was going to ride back to Austin. Is he going to auction Falcon and Old Pete off in Washington?

Also, on the note of him being Canadian. How is he able to do this? I am not knowledgeable enough on visas, but doesn’t he need to be working to use a work visa? Or does he have a green card? Can / could immigration deport him?

So he’s gonna Rosie Ruiz his way to Seattle? That’s good news for the horses. Now we just have to hope they don’t founder and/or colic from the erratic feeding schedule.

I would assume he had work visas for his previous employer. If he is just living in the US but not working he doesn’t need a visa. Retired Canadians can snowbird indefinitely in their RVs.

We also don’t know if he has dual citizenship.

Canadians can “vacation” in the US up to six months a year without a visa, but I have no idea what happens if you were in the US for longer than that on a work visa, and then quit your job. Does the six month period then begin once you’re no longer employed, or does that no longer apply since you were already in the country? :woman_shrugging:

That WY landscape looks a lot like the OK landscape he posted.

Same. Hope it is a comfortable trailer ride for them.

At some point he’ll provide a rationalization that makes it all fine. I’m mildly curious how he aligns it with his original statements … of course he will do that, because everything he does is heroic and cool and magnificent.

thanks guys.

My only experience with visas/working/tourist and needing paperwork to be in the US relates to the grooms from Sweden, England, and other varous EU countries a decade ago when I worked with them.

The tag line under his icon on the post is “Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area”.

But of course maybe he’s there, maybe he’s not.

The Flaming Gorge NRA is located in the northeast corner of Utah and the southwest corner of Wyoming. It is South of I-80, between Green River and Rock Springs, Wyoming and extends into the Uintah Mountains towards Vernal, Utah. The area is a mixture of climate, topography, and recreation opportunities well suited to a variety of summer and winter interests.

Good people of this forum,

This case has aroused strong feelings of anger and helplessness within me, as I’m sure it has for many, if not all, of you. These feelings prompted me to reach out to a childhood friend of mine named CuChullaine O’Reilly. CuChullaine is the founder of the Long Riders’ Guild and Director of the Long Riders’ Guild Press. The Long Riders’ Guild is an organization made up of equestrians who have each ridden over 1,000 continuous miles in a single journey. When I wrote to him expressing my disgust at Bertheau’s actions, he responded swiftly and implored me to make a post on this forum conveying an important message: in the event that Bertheau “arrives” in Seattle, there is a historical precedent very similar to this situation that should be heeded.

Here is the CuChullaine’s message to you:

"On the forum you will see how members of the public and very knowledgeable horse owners are expressing scorn, calling Bertheau a phony, and predicting that he will trailer the horses to the edge of Seattle, off load them and pretend that he rode that far.

There is in fact a precedent for this type of intentional charade, which was done by the infamous Russian travel criminal Valeri Popov.

After he was arrested for massive horse abuse in Germany, Russian diplomats obtained Popov’s release from jail. The horse’s were returned on the condition that Popov would drive them straight back to Russia.

But once he was out of the sight of the furious German vets and the Russian diplomats, Popov crossed into Poland, where he hid the horses in a forest for several days. Then he drove the horses through Europe, avoiding Germany, off loaded them in a parking lot close to the Eiffel Tower (his intended destination) and had his photo taken.

Popov proves that Bertheau could try to duplicate this trick and create a photo of him in the saddle with the Seattle Space Needle in the background.

Would you be able to join the Chronicle forum and explain that there is a precedent for faking an arrival?

Here is a link to Popov’s page on the LRG Hall of Shame. It tells the story in brief and includes the important photo of Popov standing with the injured horse in front of the Eiffel Tower.

http://www.thelongridersguild.com/popov.htm

If the public (and by default Cyril) learn about this sneaky trick then this will make his arrival in Seattle the subject of intense scrutiny. But first the public has to be warned that this trick has been done before and that Bertheau should not be allowed to duplicate it."

It is my sincere hope that this information is useful to you all. My heart aches for Bertheau’s horses, but I feel a small bit of relief reading about the prospect that he is trailering them. We shall see how this all pans out over the next few weeks, I suspect, for better or worse.

Thank you all for the opportunity to post here and for the work you have been putting in over the last month on this subject. Be well.

Thanks for the info & example of fakery.
Sadly, I think venting here is the only action we - as horsepeople - can take to interfere with Bertheau’s “quest”.
He’s not doing anything illegal (yet?).
Even his pitiful lack of knowledge of or interest in caring for the horses doesn’t appear actionable by any authority he’s encountered so far.
Hopefully, the TikTok videos will provide background that will conflict with Cereal’s version of the trip.
And also hope his arrival won’t generate the Hoopla he seems to be wanting.

He posted photographic evidence of smoking pot in a state (Flaming Gorge National Park in UT) that still deems it illegal if you do not have a med card. Fines and jail time as a Class B misdemeanor. Wes in TX is on it and apparently people are trying to get the DEA involved. It was part of Cereal’s IG post the other day and is still posted.

@adampennavaria
Welcome to the forums. We are a fun and knowledgable bunch of horse people if you decide to stick around. What can we as horse people do to stop him? Nothing. But we can call him out for his actions and help educate the public when we can should the opportunity arise. (if we are in that position)

If people really believe that he rode all the way from Austin to Seattle then I have a bridge I want to sell them. With today’s instantantious ability to share information and how people have been documenting his trip along side him calling his bluff, I feel, a hoax like Popov’s would be hard to pull off today. On top of the fact that he keeps changing his own rules on how this journey will play out (no team, self funded, etc) and he adjusts as he said in the lastest update “improvise, adapt, overcome” he knows he is being scrutinized for his actions.

I hope this is all over soon. He started this in early April and he wanted to make it to Seattle in 100 days. It took him 30 days to get out of TX. Should we assume that he will take another 30 to get to Wash? Google Maps says he has less than 1000 miles to go along side I-84. Walking Google says it would take 13 days. Riding a bike would take 4 days. In a car, its 14 hours.

It will be interesting to see if he camps out to take up time to spread it out, or if he just goes to his finish line of the Space Needle.

these are federal lands and no matter the state law, it is not legal.

Oh, how I wish this turns out to be true! He is so desperate to be somebody; to parlay his 15 minutes of social media notoriety into becoming a D-list celebrity. The lack of “hoopla” would be sweet retribution. For a start.

Then he should be made to walk, on foot, back to Texas. Let him improvise, adapt and overcome that scenario.

Perhaps there will be a photo with Mt. Rainier in the background. The iconic spots like the Space Needle or the more hipster Pike’s Market will be all but unreachable due to Seattle’s (also iconic) traffic.
