Caught this late - don’t know if you ever got an answer.

“Stall rest” means confined to a stall. The horse can lie down as much as he pleases.

Actually he can not. They have him tied to the front of his stall at all times to prevent him from laying down. There is a very good chance he would need immediate euthanasia if he laid down and then attempted to get back up. He is healing well so hopefully he will be able to be untied in the near future, but not as of yet.
I know one horse who survived a year on cross ties for a very severe shoulder fracture. Its obviously less than ideal but they saved him.

Thanks for the correction, Laurie. Of course I don’t know what in particular is being prescribed for The Tin Man and it appears you do (lucky you!), so I will bow out. [said with great respect, please don’t misinterpret :)]

Sorry if I confused anyone.

And best wishes for an uneventful recovery for a gallant racehorse.

No need to apologize, normally you would have been correct. His is just an abnormal situation. Even Barbaro was able to lay down as bad as his injury was, but that was because his injury was surgically repaired. TTM’s injury occured as he was getting up from surgery so it was not repaired, so it could easily become displaced with even a little movement.

Having slung many, many, MANY horses in my lifetime, this is actually one rare incidence where I wonder why they haven’t transported him somewhere or rigged up something at the track so they could put him in an Anderson sling for a few hours a day.

But then again, maybe they have. And if he’s already handwalking, it’s probably a moot point now. Regardless, every report I’ve heard says he’s relaxed, happy, and taking care of himself at his home. That’s the most important part of the battle.

Still jingling for TTM and hoping he pulls through ok!

Aww that’s a shame, he’s the pic on my calendar for December too…such a nice horse!

any updates?

Has anybody heard any news about The Tin Man’s progress? Is he off stall rest? Any plans for him?

It’s been a while, but I’ve not stopped thinking about him.
