A braiding "fashion" question

I did my chestnut mare in burgundy once, only because I had left my chestnut skein of yarn at another barn and needed to get a passport picture for her ASAP. I think it looked nice enough, but I never did show her with the coloured yarn. She was a bit of an “unconventional” hunter (i.e. she’d rather be a steeplechaser), so until we made the switch to the jumper ring, I did all I could to blend in rather than stand out!

I used to braid my little grey horse in a pretty mossy green. I thought it looked beautiful, and blended very nicely with his grey and white mane. Dad’s bay mare always gets navy to help when he takes his braids out, but I prefer to do my own bay mare in black.

I am totally braiding in dark purple on my dark bay.

Ok. So maybe no colored yarn, at least at first! My braids might be acceptable, but they won’t be perfect.

My horse is black/dark brown (depending on the season) and we’ll be showing mostly in the adult eq and some jumpers.

I haven’t noticed any colored yarn (except maybe on ponies on Canada Day) but sometimes the braiders will put a little, tasteful charm on the grown up hunter horses. Maybe that would be easier to put in for you, but would still add a little fun to the hunter attire?

Your grey is very handsome.

Are “pom poms” a new trend? I’ve never seen it before.

Once I saw the “colored yarn apocalypse thread” & realized the hunters were doing it, it had to be acceptable for an eventer & I started using navy on my grey - I love it! & I was a total Lucky Braids brand yarn devotee also but went to a fabric store and bought the highest quality yarn I could find & haven’t had an issue (I think the problem before is I was getting the cheap black yarn at Wal-Mart & it would break all the time)

True story. I did my first horse show in years this weekend - a schooling (gasp) dressage show and the horse’s owner braided the dark bay mare with hot pink yarn that we had picked out. Best.Day.EVER!

(This is neither important nor relevant to this thread but I thought I’d throw that out there.)

new/old trend. They’ve come and gone several times I think.

Some would argue that they aren’t a trend at all and just a bad idea dreamed up by my braider who loves to dress my gray like a drag queen.

Our barn colors are purple/black/silver, so you can usually find dark purple in our hunter horses braids. They do this for both rated and local shows. I only do button braids (Jumper) and use purple as well whenever I can.

I think it looks great and from far away it isn’t distractive at all sometimes hardly noticeable.

Doof, they are on my FB! I will send you one.

We mostly do ponies, so color isn’t frowned upon, we do mostly AA shows and I use, green, navy, turquoise and my favorite, mint green on a white pony… At WEF I use color, for Pony Finals, Devon or Harrisburg I use a yarn that matches the mane.

I have done some pretty wild braids for my youngest daughter who if asked what her favorite color is, answers, “Colorful.” These were her braids when she 6 and was showing in crossrails. She was champion every time in Ocala with her wild braids.

Too-bad–you really whetted my appetite with that description!

It’s not that I want DD to drop out of college and have a baby right now, but I really need a granddaughter asap so that she can have these braids! Those are soooo cute. Enjoy your little pony rider while you can! They grow up so fast!

Those are adorable.

I did mare’s black mane in a very, very deep raspberry once. It looked good, actually!
