A/C just broke, how to keep double coated dog cool in the summer heat?

This is kind of beside the point, I suspect, for the OP by now, but the key phrase here for me was “upper 80s and humid.” That’s dangerous weather.

If it was me, I’d buy the window a/c in this sort of situation. Use it for the emergency, then flip it on craigslist after you don’t need it. It would be a fast, easy sell in early June, especially since it was barely used and you’d still have the box, manual, etc.

Thanks guys for all your help! I was able to borrow 2 window ac units for the few days the ac was broken, which helped a lot. These tips are all really helpful though since the heat is something we’re going to struggle with all summer.

Thanks!

Nice update ~ glad it all worked out for your dear dog ~

  • ETA ~ miss seeing your posts SAcres ? am I just on different areas of Coth ?

Anyway nice to see you back here ~

Fans don’t work well on dogs because they don’t sweat. Fans work for people because we sweat and the air from the fan evaporates the sweat and cools us.

I have a small window unit that I bought a couple of tears ago when my ac broke. Its very handy for when the central air isn’t working plus it allows me to keep my bedroom cold at night without cooling the whole house.

There is also a cheap DIY way to make an air cooler - involves a lidded 5 gallon bucket, small fan, and ice. We made one last year for the main room the dogs like to lounge in during the day, and it was very cheap to make/run. It also kept that room in the low 70s, despite the large west-facing window, and we didn’t have to run AC to the entire house just to keep that one room cool.

Lots of tutorials on youtube for making them too!

Shave the dog down for the summer. After a day or two of hiding because he feels silly  he will thank you.

Unless it is a show dog and must be kept in hair, I can’t imagine why you would not have him clipped
