A Portion For Foxes
Oh, yes indeedy. I’d have to read it again, been a while, but I recognized a few myself, and have a hunting friend who can name them ALL for you!

Jane McClary was the author.
Please, do tell! or have your friend share their insights! it would be much appreciated!

I thought she was originally from Virginia, and from a fox hunting background, maybe I am wrong. I loved A Portion for Foxes and even more beloved are her horse books for young girls, I still have Cammie’s Choice, Cammie’s Challenge, Cammie’s Cousin, with their Wesley Dennis illustrated book jackets.

Coppers Chance too.
I think I wore the spines out.

And Cintra’s Challenge, my copies are pretty beat up too, I still re-read them all occasionally.

A Portion for Foxes

Anybody have a copy of this they’d like to unload? I read it when I was a kid ( won’t say how long ago that was) and would like to re-read…it seems to be out of print.

PM me if you have any ideas as to where I could find a used copy. Thanks!

Try amazon.com and look for the used section. I found my book there (ex-library copy in good condition) for less than ten dollars.

Barnes and Noble’s website (there is a tab for out of print books) has many copies in various conditions, most are only $1.99!

Alibris, Bookfinder and Amazon are also good sources for out of print books.

Used via Amazon from 1c (so $4 including shipping)

Try ABEbooks. Advance book exchange, usually much better prices than Amazon. Esp. shipping.
Yep found one copy 3.50 including shipping.
I just like to keep books, for the nights when 3 am is time for me to wake up for no known reason. Sigh.

I got my copy from the library.

I will no longer buy from ABE, I had a problem with one of their dealers, who advertised a book in “like new” condition and it arrived worn and tattered (and it was quite expensive). When I contacted ABE they didn’t want to get involved, even though their website at the time said something that led me to believe that they would intervene if the product was not as advertised. Anyway I had kept detailed emails in my dealings with them and the dealer, who were both quite nasty in their replies, and it was very easy to prove my argument to my credit card company and get a refund.

Wow, I am sorry about that. I’ve been dealing with them for years and never had even a tiny bit of trouble. Although I don’t buy expensive.

This was a favorite of mine and I haven’t read it in years - I’m going to look for a copy.

I also like the “Flambards” series written by K.M. Peyton. Three separate novels now all together since the BBC television series based upon the books.

Hey, In Kitty Slater’s “Hunt Country of Virginia” you can recognize-I mean easily recognize-most of the characters. I bet there were a lot of annoyed folk when that book came out! Fax Templeton, The Beast, Mildred, etc. they’re all there.

I love to read “A Portion for Foxes” but it is not well written-it’s like two books smushed into one-the fox hunting and sex book and the civil rights book. Jane Mc-whatever contradicts herself, looses track of who she’s talking about, etc. BUT when I was in the 8th grade it was some kind of hot book with what (in that long ago day) were amazing sex scenes-about 1/2 of which my buddy and I who both read the book understood.

I think her son was a Master for a while somewhere in VA? She also wrote about her experiences riding in Ireland. I read a couple of her other things and didn’t like them as much as APPF.

Has anyone read The Frosty Filly? Now there’s a great fictionalized hunt book!

AND PS The Bolivars which is sooooooo also a repressed gay love story it seems laughable today
