Adding another pet? Kitten or another dog?

So I’ve been thinking of adding another one to the mix. Right now I have 2 cats one 3 the other 9. The 3yr old likes to play the “I’m not touching you” game with my older 9yr old girl she hates it. And as much as she yells and swats him he sits there and then like pokes her with his paw. Until she moves then he follows her. Then if she hides in a cubby hole he wants to get in too. But if she leaves it’s no longer fun. He’s that annoying little brother. He always has to harass her when he’s not expecting it or just laying around. So I thought a kitten. I’ve always wanted a kitten since my guys were older when I adopted them. Not sure how if my 3yr old would annoy a kitten though. Or the kitten hurt him since both of my cats are declawed.

So I thought maybe another dog. Belle lived with other dogs and loves to play. I do think it would be good for her. I’ve always wanted something a little smaller like a yorkie or poodle. But I’m more of a cat person. It would be nice if Belle would have another dog friend, I worry she sometimes gets lonely. Plus I thought of going to a breeder but I’ve mostly stuck with craigslist even though that site really annoys me.

If you had to pick what would you get? Pro’s and con’s of each? I’m not looking to jump into anything anytime soon just really throwing the idea around and see what comes up and what to get if anything.

declawed does not mean defenseless.
They can still bite…

by all means, get a kitten.

And a puppy…

(you didn’t think you’d get off that easy?!)

Ok, lat summer I got cat #3. Not by design, but because she just showed up.
At first we had a lot of hissing going on from the resident evil, I mean cats.
they were erm, three I think. (the last few years kind of melted together…) and siblings.

At first they ignored ‘new cat’ or swatted at her. I think she was under a year, but I am not sure, I muissed the window of opportunity to have the vet check, but I am thinking she is young.

Now sometime during the last year they are all getting along. And new cat went from being the butt of the jokes to being the joker.

I like kitten AND puppy too!

At LEAST a kitten.

Puppies require you to get up several times a night for potty.

heehee

I’m in that camp too! But seriously. If you are more of a cat person, get another MALE cat. female catsIMHO are from the devil and I have one. It might be nice to get a dog to play with your dog, but a kitteh is such a joy! check CL:rolleyes: or local rescues:( and go with your heart.

The problem with a 2nd male cat is, well, a 2nd male cat LOL They tend to be more territorial and more prone to start spraying as a result. IME

I know - get a little torti or cali kitten, so nice and quiet

IME, my male cats have been way more laid back and less territorial than the females, and I’ve NEVER had problems with a male spraying providing he was neutered young.

I actually have 4 males cats right now… :eek::lol:

In fairness, I just had 2 house cats to start with. The third one is my barn cat who came with the farm. The fourth one was a (feral) friend of the third one who decided he, too, would like to live in our barn.

We never had trouble with territory battles until we were adopted by a young male LOL

At one time, I had 4 males and 1 female ranging between 6 months and 9 years apart in age. All four males got along great. The female didn’t get along with any of the males. Still doesn’t even though she was 6 months old when I got the first male.

How about my Xolo foster?? It’s a cat like dog. Win win

I have calicos and tortoiseshells and they are INSANE. I cannot think of a less “nice and quiet” cat

I have four cats in the house and they are all female. There is an obvious pecking order, but they’re all comfortable in their place in the pack and there are no squabbles or picking at each other.

Well I can help out in the kitten/cat department – currently trapping ferals off the streets in our little town (Columbiana, AL). Have had the mama’s vet work done, a 3 month old kitten being done today, a tiny kitten (6 wks or so) is upstairs in the bathroom and already pretty tame. Two more (maybe 3) little kittens to catch and one more adult. Trap is reset, they are being vetted – want to help out? FREE to good home.

lol wow! I didn’t expect so many replies.

I am thinking going kitten route. Because even though I’m looking for an older med. sized dog I have had no luck. I’ve emailed people, called, text, you name it. No luck. I don’t get it. If you post a pet be serious.

I’m hoping if I get a young kitten 8wks it won’t be to bad with my two getting nuts over it. I’m sure my 3yr old male will protest and my 9yr old female will give me the look of death.

Wish you were closer!

You so missed my sarcasm! Yes, mine are insane too, but in a very very fun way. Well, most of the time

That’s how it’s always been for me too, until this current situation I posted about (and on which you replied, thank you :)) about the one aggression from an adult to a kitten. Both female. Both torti. Ohbutwait, 3 out of the 4 are female, same 3/4 are torti

Just know 8 weeks is pretty small and not well able to defend itself yet. 12 weeks may be better - can run faster LOL

lol. Poor thing will need to run faster from me. My poor kitties are loved and cuddled to the point sometimes they hide lol. I’ve started to look at rescues to make sure they are FeLV neg.

Me too. AND she’s a calico. AND she was put up for adoption at a very young age so she wasn’t well socialized.

But damn, she is cute.

I am a dog person all the way (though I do have two of the world’s best cats as well). I LOVE my rescued chihuahua! Small dogs—who knew? She’s awesome, easy, fun, AND she plays with my cat Townes (he likes it) and respects the space of my other cat Desmond (he demands it). I would definitely go dog, but that’s me. Good luck making a choice!

My brain must have short circuited before the thought reached the sarcasm processing center. “Calicos and tortoiseshells nice and quiet … zzzzzzzp … zaapppppp …BBBXT”

Yeah, pretty sure that’s what happened

I am taking back a calico in a week or so that a friend of mine can no longer keep. Five cats will be … interesting. One calico, two torties, one tuxedo, one grey and white. All female. Sigh.
