Put it all together…

How long does it take to see results from adding rice bran to a horse’s diet? Or, what else can I do to fatten up my horses?
Backstory…
I got the nine year old OTTB in April, and he’s always been on the thin side. He is on 23/7 turnout (about 30 acres with eight others), and comes into his stall for 5 lbs TC Senior, Smartpack of U-Gard & SmartHoof, and recently added 1 lb alfalfa pellets and 1 lb rice bran. He also has free choice hay in his stall. He is a cribber, but collar seems to be working. Was de-wormed with Quest a few months ago and new FEC sample dropped off at vet this morning. Equine dentist appt is this month. He is ridden lightly once a week.
I got the four year old OTTB in mid-August. His last race was in July. They were racing him thin, and now he’s losing the track muscling. I am just starting to see slight ribs. He has same turnout and eats the same diet (although he does not crib). His FEC sample was also dropped off at vet this morning. He has not been worked at all.
Both horses have soft, shiny coats, but I would really like to see both fattened up as we head into winter.
I have considered their turnout may be overgrazed (although the other horses are fat as ticks ), so this morning I had the opportunity to move them into a 20 acre coastal hay field with just one other gelding.
It is frustrating being the owner with two thin horses, yet I am trying everything I know to do. :sigh: Am I missing something?[/QUOTE]
I have a 17hh OTTB HARD Keeper, we could feed him continuously and he didn’t change much until we discovered a secret weapon EXCEL EQ, it’s full of Omegas & ingredients like vitamin E. When we first bought him, he was boarded and was actually gaining weight on 3 flakes of alfalfa, 6lbs Ultium competition and 2 pumps of Excel EQ/day. After we moved him home, we dropped the EQ, increased his alfalfa to 4 flakes, free feed Bermuda and continued the Ultium competition and it got hot & he started dropping weight, like crazy. We added 2lbs Beet pulp, a half cup of coconut oil & an electrolyte and he stabilized, we went back to one pump of Excel EQ and he felt better. A few weeks ago we added back two pumps of Excel EQ and he’s gaining and moves better. It is my understanding that Rations Plus does the same thing. Today he’s getting 4 flakes alfalfa, free feed Bermuda, half cup coconut oil (for fat), 6lbs Ultium Competition Formula, 2 pumps Excel EQ, 2lbs soaked beet pulp shreds, 1lb rice bran meal a small amount of electrolyte and a hoof supplement, I’m still increasing the rice bran meal to get to two lbs. He’s gaining weight steadily now. My advice would be to add everything (slowly) and a Rations Plus or Excel EQ. One other thing is that some horses lose weight in the heat and shade can be as important as the other components, at least here in AZ.
