Adding supplemental salt in addition to salt block -- who knew?

Is softener salt safe to feed?

You might have TSC special order in the feed salt for you. They have special ordered things for me before. Our TSC carries both plain salt and mineralized feed salt, so the company does have it available. We use the plain so my minerals are not in excess, because horses already get enough minerals in their vitamins. Don’t want any overdosing. The yellow Prussic on the bag is to help keep salt from getting chunky (or solid) with moisture. You still need to keep the bag closed if weather is humid.

Wrt salt sold for water softeners-
Read the label carefully to see what is in it.
Around here, the 40 lb white salt blocks we use for the horses are also sold for water softeners. So it might well be compatible.

Thanks for the suggestions – it was so odd that they quit carrying bags of loose salt (as did the few other locations within driving distance).

Do they still make salt tablets, like they used to give to athletes? Probably before Gatorade was invented, but still. Off to google it.

ETA - yep, they do! Interesting. 500 mg tablets.

Same here. For years and years

I use the loose Redmond Rock salt in my horse’s grain and he gobbles it up. Keeps him drinking and makes me feel better knowing he’s getting it.

An ounce of iodized table salt is 2 tablespoons – for a 1000 lb. horse. (A coffee scoop is usually 2 T.)

I just added it recently because my horse’s nutritionist told me to. I had thought that my electrolyte pellets and salt block was sufficient.
