Adopting a former stray dog: Scout is home!

You might call a vet and ask if Benadryl might take the edge off. I know one dog with allergies that make him itch, that gets 1/2 tab in the AM and ,if needed, one in the PM.

Both my rescued GSD had terribly dry, flakey, itchy skin and
Poor quality fur.
I immediately put them on all raw or semi- raw diet plus a general
Purpose Vit/ min. Supplement.
My current girl also had/has hip
Problems. Better than all the joint supplements is SALMON.
She get a full can everyday for
The omegas and doesn’t need the joint supps. plus her coat looks great.

How much raw do you feed (or did at this time of them coming home) in lbs and in calories? And the salmon is a good idea. How did their tummies adjust?

How long did it take for the skin to calm down? I feel for the poor itchy girl. I know GSDs can suffer from the itchy skin (I’ve had two others with a healthy does of shepherd in them) but once it’s under control it should be more manageable.

Both of mine were extremely
Underweight 40 lbs.each, so malnourished. both were 70-75 lbs. When healthy.
Don’t remember the weight of food but averaged 1-2 chicken quarters per day plus raw eggs, which are also great for skin and fur.
The improvement in the skin was pretty quick.

Everyone is settling in nicely!

First three photos are at the Being Brave class. This one was fun because for the first 3 classes there was only one other dog (I seem to be the only one who can consistently make it to class) but this class managed to have everyone attend! So we did doggy socialization at the beginning of class. Peep Rowdy staying close to me in the first photo, then getting brave enough to squeeze between Scout and another dog to get pets and a little treat from an unknown human… tail tucked, but big boy bravery engaged!

Second photo is Scout taking a quick little self-proclaimed time out from the fray of doggos before diving back in to socialize.

Fourth photo is Scout showing off a toy bone that she “discovered” (gosh this dog loves toys!! mostly plushies but anything will do).

Fifth photo was mid-wag (I promise her tail isn’t broken) being told she’s a good girl

Last photo is Scout staying close while I did pilates after we came home from a big walk. Rowdy is the passed out black blob over her shoulder lol

Rowdy is learning he can play with Scout, which he enjoys for a few minutes, then he says “that’s enough I’m done” and grabs a bit of space. Scout respects this 95% of the time… the other 5% she tries to taunt him back into playing (which sometimes works but most times doesn’t lol)

Things are going really well!!

We are just past 4 weeks with Scout and she is fully adjusted. She has boundless puppy energy, is very sensitive and smart, and loves to cuddle.

Scout LOVES to jump, and last weekend she decided there was a shortcut to loading into my small SUV… instead of waiting for me to open the back door to jump onto the back seat which is covered by a hammock (the only place I’ve ever loaded her…), she decided to jump in through the open front passenger window. I was shocked because my energy was NOT directing her there, we were on a clear path for the back door but she spyed the open window as we were just in line with it and in she jumped.

She looked at me like “hey look, I found a short cut! I’m pretty smart, right?” at the same time I was saying “Scout NO!” (because it happened SO quickly). She scooted over into the driver seat instead so I walked around the vehicle, opened the drivers door for her to hop out, then loaded her into the back per usual.

Fast forward to Monday and her hock was swollen. She was not favouring it (other than a wonky step here and there), no pain reaction when I palpated it, very minimal heat, and mostly she seemed to not even notice. Regardless, Monday evening when it was still swollen I sent a note off to the vet to book an appointment and was able to get us in for yesterday evening.

Xrays showed she has multiple fractures and arthritis in that joint - all likely from an older injury that flared up. So here we are, trying to slow down the puppy for a few weeks to give her time for the inflammation to come down, and with the knowledge that we will have a lifetime of management that we are going to try to get ahead of now to give her the best possible outcomes.

Poor sweet baby girl has had a rough start in her short life.

Here’s Scout looking moderately guilty after disemboweling her stuffed monkey

LOOK at those Ears!!

If a stiff wind came by she would soar like a kite.

Sorry to hear Scout has an old break but I am glad you guys know and can manager her correctly for the future. And holy cow, jumping through the window, that must have caught you off guard.

I love the GoDog in the background with her and the destroyed monkey. Those GoDogs are great!

Sending Jingles for swift healing!

My husband had an Aussie Shepherd mix that used to do that.

Her coat has really started to shine these last few days. Still has the scratchy malnourished coat hanging on in a few places but boy is she looking good. And she has put on more weight… body condition score 4 at the vet!!

Here we are trying out the various ways some retired boot socks can help with an ice pack on the swollen hock (spoiler alert, it only works for a few minutes at a time while I can sit with her, no matter how I set it… she’s just too “on the go”!)

Today Miss Scout was relaxed enough to explore more of the farm when I brought her out to ride. She also played hard with the three resident golden retrievers plus a spare golden who also came for a visit.
A very good doggie day!

Scout continues to thrive. She had to be sedated for a vet appointment to look at a lump in her mouth deep under her tongue (wtf … how…??) and she fought the sedation pretty hard, and then of course it took a while for her to shake it off afterwards. She had to wear her ears at half-mast and fall asleep with her head in my lap when we got back home.
We are just shy of three months with her home with us and is fully settled in. 100% best decision ever bringing her home.

Recall is great… stopping the full-force run back with recall by jumping on the patio furniture needs to be worked on lmao
But sitting on cushions on the floor is also good.

Playing with a new friend (friends’ dog that she just adopted) at the pet store. They will have so much fun hanging out at the barn together!

I think this is the last nice weekend of the year. We get snow next week :snowman_with_snow:

Scout had a great time at the farm today… hiking, playing, and running FAST. I got this video near the end of our barn time after she had already spent 2.5 solid hours playing and running. Watch the aisle at the start. This gal has non-stop energy and is a little speed demon! We’ll definitely include a wee bit of metacam with dinner tonight, though, as I’m sure her broken/arthritic hock will be sore.
