My Co-worker events her 14h pony at training level. She is about 5’4". They kick ass
Going to try her has made me even more determined to get this baby weight off!
^^ This! I rode a couple of a friend’s 13.2 ponies last year and my current pony is perhaps 14.1 if she stands on tiptoes (I am 5.6 and the scales scare me so I haven’t been near them in years… I even close my eyes when going to the doctor. Denial is powerful stuff… ahem).
Anyway, ponies are so much fun! But I do have to be more careful with my upper body when jumping than on my 17 hand OTTB…
OP, ride whatever makes you happy I say! Have fun!
I am 5’11" and 155 lbs, and I was very comfortable schooling my daughter’s lease pony who was a 13.2h haflinger. Ironically, he wore the same size saddle, girth and bridle as my regular mount, who is a 15.2h OTTB. Pony actually had a bigger bit than the TB! I think height really has very little to do with it
It’s funny… I’m finding that I’m more comfortable on little horses, though I may look a little silly!
When you are an adult riding a pony and there is any issue with your size being large (those of you 5’2" and 100 lbs etc are excluded!), you have to be more thoughtful of how you ride and the work that you do. You can’t get ahead of the horse. You have to be very steady and strong in your position. I put a lot of thought into whether and how much we jump; I don’t worry about the dressage work. Mine is sturdy and I think she carries me well. I find her a blast to ride and I really enjoy her.
We American sport horse riders have gotten used to mounting relatively small people on relatively large horses. If you look at historical dressage pictures, for the most part you see fairly tall men riding horses under 15 hands. So, a woman riding a pony is pretty much in the same ballpark in terms of proportion, and something I noticed is that a lot of dressage technique that I’d read about all my life in terms of use of my seat and leg Suddenly All Just Worked when I was riding a pony. My leg happens to sit on her exactly so; I have far more influence over her body.
Weight can be a factor and should be considered when choosing a pony, but I would agree height per se is not the only factor in weight carrying. Icelandic Horses carry full sized adults; Quarter Horses and Arabians carry full grown tall men and are frequently under 15 h.
As always, listen to your horse.
Ponies are sturdy and fun and I never got to have one as a kid. I have one now and I really enjoy riding and competing her.
^ what poltroon said. As an additional point–I think a pony or small horse will do fine with a skilled and balanced rider even if they are a taller or heavier than ideal. I do think it is harder on a smaller horse if the rider is large and also learning to ride (i.e. not good with their balance or bouncing around, etc.).
Bikoman–you look great on your horse and I am really surprised that he/she is only 15.1! But you also look like an accomplished rider. When my hubby decided to take up riding I had reservations about him riding my 16.1 h TB. He is 6’4", 200 lbs. Not overweight–but he is very tall and was a beginner rider. It did work to start out (because my mare is a saint of horse) but I was glad when he got more proficient because I felt like his balance could easily affect my horse (despite her weighing about 1200 lbs). Now he has his own horse and I don’t worry a bit about him affecting that horses balance as he learns to ride. His current horse is 18 hands, about 1600 lbs. Works well for a 6’4" dude.
I’m 5’5" and my mare is 14.3 on a good day. Everyone says we look fine together.
She is so fun to ride, and in a way, I think the fact that I can affect her more is a good thing. She leans when I lean, so that teaches me to ride better, yet allows me to influence her more than my 16 hand gelding who can ignore my body language when it damn well suits him.
