Adult "shadowing" Options?

Thank you so much! I will definitely look into those! I have thought about buying a horse I could teach lessons with, or half lease while also being able to utilize them for myself. Certainly seems to be the suggested route with these comments- appreciate the supportive response!

What about trying to shadow someone for a week or doing during a winter circuit? This would require connections but could be educational even if you don’t ride.

I know of a big young horse trainer at WEF who had a younger guy come for 2 weeks to learn. The guy did everything - helped hack at home, brought horses to ring, watched client clients, watched at the ring, set jumps, watched the horses school. Maybe you could do something similar?

Thanks for all your insight. Definitely agree and understand- the business and clients have to come first- wouldn’t expect any different.

Oh yes! That sounds perfect- I wasn’t sure if anyone offered such a thing. Shadowing is probably the correct term I’m looking for while I’m looking for potential opportunities - thank you!

I have a very similar story except I didn’t own a horse. My daughter and I were taking lessons with our coach. I was also doing night check once a week. Eventually I started warming up horses for her to get them ready for her to jump school them. I would also occasionally ride the schoolies that needed it that she didn’t have time for. It was a great arrangement for me, loved every moment of it but I agree that you need an established relationship, I don’t think you could just walk off the street and get this type of arrangement.

What is it that you are wanting to learn or practice? Riding skills (think competition)? Training skills (think young horses)? Horse / farm management? Teaching other riders? All different focused would change who/ what/ where I would focus on looking for opportunities.

I would network hard. Call anyone and everyone you know to ask or if they can make an introduction. I think you’ll find people are happy to teach and mentor those who are interested.
