Adults riding ponies? (ex: connemaras!)

Pictures! We need them!

I, for one, will be jealous.

I’ve ridden said Connemara mentioned up thread and I love it. I feel as though I’m at the top end of her weight/height limit, or I am too self conscious as those watching have said it looks fine. Either way I’ve since ridden on the flat, popped over some jumps, and took her on the trails.

I want one.

Well, my trainer used to train and show my pony. I’m 5’3" but the trainer is at least 5’8." The said pony is 4.3 h on a good day if he stands on tippy toes. Plenty of people have told me, “I didn’t know he was this short” when they see him in the stalls. lol. For some reason he look really big in arena.

I am 5’9 and after decades of nothing under 16.2 hands my current mare is 15.1 max . She is a wide bodied mare so my long legs hang just right and she doesn’t feel small at all. The best part is the ability to mount her and getting off is easy too.

My daughter is 5’7 and her mare is 14.1. They fit together just fine and the mare is an average build.

I think you will fit your pony just fine.

You guys are terrible enablers! I’m waffling because although he’s super cute, he’s 9 years old already and has no training other than being longed and lightly backed 1.5 years ago. He’s also too far away to look at in person given the current state of things. Although he is well cared for he could really use an upgrade as far as education so that he can have better prospects in life. That would make buying him practically a good deed, right??

Think of all of us that can’t have a pony right now. It would be a fantastic deed to have someone posting some adorable pics so we can live vicariously a bit.

I recently bought a 10 year old, poorly started, couldn’t steer, ugly pony as a mercy buy. I’m just a backyard ammy, but it only took a couple months to have him reliably at Training level. Hoping to have him at 2nd by end of year next year (he’ll be 12 then). He’s turned into quite a cute mover. Really excited to start showing him next year.

Ponies stay sound and useful well into their 20s. They live longer on average (barring unforseen issues).

enabling = On*
And yes!! You’d be giving that pony a shot at a useful life with a loving, doting family in his future. 🙂

But you could also pick up a pony already started correctly for a bit more cash outlay. I saw quite a few really nice ones pre-quarantine.

i’m only 5’0. Most of my horses are 13.1 - 15.2. If i climb up on my 17-plus i need a few minutes to adjust my brain. i have three that are around 16h and even that feels too high to me too. I prefer a horse more my size. Even on the ground. (it’s way easier to groom a horse whose back you can reach without a stool) When i watch the shows, i like seeing a horse and rider that are size matched. When a little rider aboard a great dane enter the ring, it is a struggle for me to not keep refeeling that they are off. I don’t know if i’m looking at reality or my prejudice over the mismatch.

I just bought my first dressage pony as an adult.

I’m 5’2 and she’s 14.0, but I am so excited to be joining the world of adult pony riders. She already riders bigger than my 15.2 OTTB. Especially with the larger breeds like Connemaras, you should be okay size-wise. They take up a surprisingly large amount of your leg.

You people are making me laugh with your 15.1 “ponies”! I’m 5-3" and my lease horse Is a GRP who is… I don’t even want to know. She makes my retired sturdy 15 hand mare look like a Clydesdale. We look ridiculous standing next to each other, but she looks a lot bigger moving and rides like a little horse.

LOL…well my current pony is the real deal at 14.2 hands with shoes but he’s stout, really stout.

Please excuse our mistakes in the test; but, I think you get the idea of his build…like a brick sh!t house …

Well I am petite at 5’2" but I’ve been showing welsh cobs in dressage for many, many years. I’ve taken more than one to FEI including a section C welsh cob who hits 13 hands when standing on his tippy toes (buckskin). I feel I’ve been scored fairly for the most part. No one has said that I shouldn’t be on a pony but I did have one judge who asked “why don’t you want to ride a real horse, you’re more than accomplished???” LOL, I ride what I love and I love what I ride. My current main ride, a section D welsh cob gelding, is 14.2 (bay that is pictured). We’re solid second level having a blast…I’m very grateful to be riding something of appropriate size for me at 56. He’s only 6 so we’ll see how far this pony and I go.

Love my Irish Draught/Connemara/Tb cross. She is 15 hands, schooling PSG, and will pack a beginner walk trot. I wish I could clone her. The judges are very fair to her. She doesn’t get high scores with her limited flash, but she does get fair scores with correct paces and movement.

Welcome to the wonderful world of ponies!

I do not own a Connemara but I am working with a 2 year old Top Gun daughter and she is lovely.

I am 5’5” and one of my main rides is a Welsh section B/Hanoverian stallion. He is 14 hands and a blast.

I also bought a 3 year old 14.1 Quarab mare last summer. I was not shopping, but there was something about her. My very own first horse was a Quarab who was 14.2. Wonderful mare…I am sure this youngster is just her reincarnate, in red pants.

I do still enjoy the big horses, but it is nice to be on something appropriately sized for my little legs. And good training is rewarded well with these guys, have no fear.

I’m only 5’4” but my tallest horse is only 15hh, he’s an Azteca. I fine with it. I love ponies. I like being a only to get on and off of my horse from the ground, especially out on the trail. I don’t need an extra tall trailer. I don’t have to struggle to groom and tack up my horse. Plus a lot of ponies not only eat less from being smaller but are also easy keepers.

i’m 5’0 (used to be 5.1) Most of my horses have been around 15h or shorter. i feel absolutely silly on anything 16 or over. 15.2 seems tall to me. I like feeling compatible, in size, musculature and temperament to my horse. (so i gravitate to short, muscley dancy-prancey mean ones…) My favorite two horses in my life have been my 14.2 hottie Morgan stallion and my sorrel mustang mare. These days i’m riding: 14.2 thick as a brick 4yo buckskin gelding; 14.2 prancy hot missouri foxtrotter; 13.2 ponymule; 15.2 dapple palomino curly mare; 15.2 stringy gray arab mare. The two taller girls feel quite big to me…esp the arab as she is so wire-y and lean. And the curly mare is quite green so she has a lot of balance to learn.

i don’t think it looks pretty: short people on tall horses. But i’d sure rather see that than heavy people on little horses or mules.

I’m 5’1 and petite so feel most comfortable on horses under 16h. I recently purchased a 14.2 WelshX who makes most TBs look like brick houses. She is so narrow that I think even someone who is 5’4 would look oversized on her. There’s nothing like having nothing between your legs to keep you accountable about how you use your upper body.

I’m reviving this thread. For alot of years I wanted something that was at least 16 hds. My retired mare, may she rest in peace and green pastures, was 15.3 Her successor is a 15 hand-ish OTTB gelding who is the slowest, laziest horse on the planet. He’s also extremely level headed, a wonderful trail horse, and if I get off him on the trail I’m not stuck looking for something to use as a step stool.

Since I’m hedging more towards dressage these days I find myself looking for tiny warmbloods or something small with lovely, fancy movement. I’m 5’3" and I just don’t feel like I need a huge horse under me anymore. What for? When a pony can get the job done and if it dumps me, the ground is a whole lot closer.

Yes, or an Iberian ”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹

Mine isn’t terribly tall or large. However, I am still lusting after a Connemara!
