I was so excited to see this thread - mine only dunks “good” hay. The grassy, dry hay that I got over the winter got cleaned up with not even one dunk. The nice green fragrant alfalfa gets saturated until the water bucket resembles pea soup. I am definitely trying the two water tub trick. Thanks for posting!

Thought I would pass along my new found “hay all over the stall” problem solution. My newish horse dunks. Even though he has a freshly cleaned water bucket next to his hay he also found the need to walk across the stall to the automatic waterer and use it to dunk hay. Along the way half the hay would fall out of his mouth. Bottom line is that his large mouthfuls of hay ended up scattered all over the stall. At $15/bale his habit was getting mighty pricy. Plus taking me forever to clean his stall! I bought him a PortaGrazer. Problem Solved!!! He can only take very small bites of hay. While still in his mouth, dunks then eats. No excess hay on the ground. Nor is he walking to the auto-waterer. Very little hay ends up in the dunking bucket, which is why I think he does not feel the need to also use the auto-waterer.
On a side note - much faster to fill than a hay net!
