Air vest/safety vest

I wear an Airowear Outlyne vest. Have for years, whether flatting or jumping (jumpers up through .95). It is comfortable, easy to put on, and wears well. I’ve shown in it (rated) too. I’ve read all the arguments for and against vests, and can only use my own experiences to guide my use. I’ve come off with and without one. I prefer with.

@right horse at the right time

after looking through a few of the threads, I don’t have any more studies than anyone else has. Reading the studies about the air vests, and knowing that data interpretation is so important, and actually having been somewhat involved in this at one time, LOL, at least there is a defined way to proceed.

What studies? Please supply, because there are none. Interested in what you have read???

@sisu27 they can’t possibly make them mandatory when there is no research to support them. They require you wear a standard vest underneath for competition.

IMO you are best off with a standard body protector. Not that popular on CoTH but I love my Tipperary. Had many falls in them over the years with no issues.

Air vests must be worn over a body protection vest for USEA rule compliance. I personally would never wear an air vest without a body protector. There are some that are one piece air and body protectors-Point Two makes a hybrid with the Race2 Race body protector. I have that one and it’s a bit heavy. My personal thought is this: find the best fit with one that is comfortable to wear, because that is the one he/she is most likely to put on on a regular basis.

I have a P2 Hybrid. It was a 2016 Xmas gift. I was making the jump from a CO XC body protector (circa 1996 with all the bulk) was easy.

One would think but I did hear there were discussions in The UK. That is all I said. If they did it would obviously not negate the need to wear a standard body protector as well. It would be in addition to.

I am well aware that to compete in Eventing you require a body protector underneath. I did not read that this person was doing so. Nor am I.

right horse, skydy was responding to your question and your comment.
Your response to her was unnecessarily rude, IMO.

I do not compete, but I do also use a Tipperary for riding, and have no complaints about it and this is my 4th one.

My humble users opinion…

My major wreck happened while I was mounting, so an air vest would have been of little use, as it would not yet of been hooked up…

Since that major wreck I have always worn my Airowear Outlyne, and the one time I fell off while wearing it, I was winded, had some minor bruising and soreness, but it did it’s job well. I have reached an age, size and shape where I splat or thud rather than bounce, so I love mine.

Your opinion and mine about her response differ and I choose not to spend my time explaining my opinion to you, but should you care to read my OP and her response more closely a second time, have at it.

Thanks for weighing in on the brand as someone who rides and uses a vest; I appreciate it!

Super, thank you! I’m feeling the same - making an informed decision individually is key. Thanks for the specifics!

Sounds like a few people like this one.

Thank you for the information!

Yes, people like the airowear outlyne…but it is actually specifically shaped for women. I’d take your friend to an eventing-oriented tack store and try a bunch of brands on…

Ahhhh… didn’t realize that, thank you! Hmmm.

Thank you for your help!
