Akene separated :( Help? UPDATE: works anyway; also options. and pie
I teach high school. Maybe if my face consisted of “angular planes” I’d be more influential.

OP, if you set up a GoFundMe page I’ll contribute towards a new jar of Akene.
DAF-initely. Gotta get some angular planes… somewhere… on the face is good if you can’t be an architect. Also, if you are a woman, you would not mind being raped by a guy… so long as you respected his power. And you wouldn’t lose any of yours by being raped.

But you’d never suggest that someone with some bad Akene to set up a GoFundMe page.

pretty sure that even at minimum wage the time value of setting up a GFM page - even excluding the substantial time and wine I’d need to stomach the concept - would exceed that of the Akene.

I did check with Beval, and received a timely but not very useful response: barely paraphrased, it was “no idea.”

Onward for me, with thanks for the fun!

Resurrecting my own trainwreck thread to report a couple of things -

  1. Separated Akene works just fine; and
  2. Only problem is that you run through it FAST and now I’m out.

Since I know in addition to Ayn Rand fans there are a number of Akene addicts on this thread, has anyone discovered anything better? I doubt it. Now it IS time to call Beval.

I LOFF this thread!!! So nice to see it bumped up.

Don’t forget this thread also discusses the merits of Vodka Pie crust and Vogel boot cleaner (RIP)…

I’d go with Belharra, if it was me and you wanted to spend the same amount of money on a High Dollar Product. I love how it makes my leather feel and smell, and it is never greasy. I don’t even like Devoucoux one iota but dang is their balm good:
http://www.tailoredequestrian.com/belharra-balsam.html

ha - yes, vodka pie crust - just in time for apple season! And my Cuisinart no longer smells like Akene (thanks, hummus) (which didn’t taste like Akene) (don’t lie to me, you know you’ve tasted it by hook or by crook).

I’ll look for the Belharra. Is it creamy like Akene or slippery like Effax Lederbalsam? I’m not in love with the Effax stuff, or the Belvoir balsam, which is similar. The Butet has turned me into the worst princess - even the Stackhouse just wanted olive oil.

Hmm… the consistency is hard to explain.

It’s much softer/creamier than Passier or Effax lederbalsam. I’d liken it to a can of Vaseline left on your dashboard on a warm, sunny day.

It smells heavenly. Very soft which makes for nice, even applications. Dries quickly with no film left behind (looking at YOU, Passier) and a rich, soft patina.

The consistency is half the reason I love it so much. If I had to say “it’s like XXX product” I’d say it’s closer to Effax in terms of consistency. I did not like Belvoir either. It does not leave residue/film which is my favorite thing about it. I am very sad I am almost out.

I have to say that CWD’s conditioner is my favorite, but dang is it expensive. Doesn’t liquify as much as Effax, smells nicer. Passier is too waxy for some things…don’t much like it on my saddle at all.

And this reminds me, I need to make peach pie before they are all gone…

Passier has a place, I’ve found – oil up your saddle’s seat before an XC or hunt in the rain… great traction and stickability.

  1. pie crust should be made with lard
2)I like higher standards to clean but their conditioner isn’t my fav. Maybe I’ll try this stuff. But I will not leave it in my trailer.

mmm, two of my favorite topics: tack and food.

Second the stickiness of Passier - I had the WORST flat ride after someone tried to be nice and slathered my saddle with it. I was so stuck to the saddle I couldn’t adjust my position at all. Yuck.

I was ready t love the HS conditioner - the soap is very nice - but was disappointed too. Now I’m torn between branching out to Devoucoux or CWD, or sticking with Akene. If only they could send scratch & sniffs - that’d decide it for sure.

PI, I know that, in theory about lard, but I just can’t trade off the flavor of butter for a little more flakiness. Speaking of which, do all you pie fans know about Dufour pastry dough? All butter; insanely good and easy. And no need for the Akene Cuisinart, just to bring it back to topic.

I really like Higher Standards leather balm (I also like their soap). I put it on with my bare hands and that works best. But I’ve tried EVERYTHING on the market including Akene. I think it must just be personal preference. For me, HS worked well and didn’t make my hands feel yucky or hard to wash off.

ps I disliked the CWD and Devoucoux.

 we can’t be friends.

glib aside, that’s so sad! what didn’t you like?

as someone who totally has OCD about things on their hands, it does leave a little bit of a weirdness on you – but I accept it as a fair tradeoff because of how it makes my tack feel and smell…

Seriously the smell is just heavenly… I don’t even know what it is… it’s a sweet almost floral smell, hints of honey and coconut. It’s very nice.

also… speaking of things that smell… The Tad Coffin Balm actually is really nice and is another one that leaves a nice patina without too much waxiness. But it smells like spoiled & spiced milk to me.

I didn’t like the feel on my hands, and honestly, I don’t like that much scent in my tack cleaning products. Feel like it might attract bugs when I ride;). I also just didn’t find it did a better job on the leather to justify the cost and weirdness on my hands.

title updated as a service to humanity (and pie lovers).

I’m much less fussy about things on my hands than on my tack - effax is wonderful for my hands, but leaves my tack sticky and gross. I do love scented tack products but apparently am flexibie: I disliked the scent of Akene til I liked what it did for my tack, and now love it. Same thing happened with Hydrophane glycerine. I draw the line at TC though: this isn’t the first time I’ve read that it stinks.

I was surprised that I didn’t care for the HS balm. The soap I’m currently using seems to condition better - it’s Emerald Valley’s tea tree soap, and is straight up wonderful as well as smelling great. (Tack still smells like leather though.)

Beowulf, do you really get your Devoucoux stuff from abroad? Surely someone in the US carries it.

I haven’t bought it abroad yet. I usually ask a rep to order it for me. They let me know it’s beneath them, but they’ve obliged in the past so they don’t offend the BNT whose wing I fall under

Total toads to deal with, but the product itself is worth it.

HS would have been my suggestion… it’s my second-favorite after Akene (which is just so. darn. expensive). I have some of the CWD conditioner. If you PM me your address, I’ll send you a little Sephora-sample-size-container of it.

I love to bake pies and really, really want to try the vodka crust recipe.

But what would I do with the rest of the bottle? Does it work with super cheap drain cleaner vodka?

Please advise.

In other news, I’ve been using the Voltaire glycerin soap and conditioner since that’s what my groom has handy, and it’s fantastic.

Any type of unflavored vodka is fine. Buy airplane sized bottles if that makes sense. I don’t personally have the “using it up” problem

Vodka pie crust is the way to ho
