I have four TBs who don’t care one whit about the SleekEZ. They run the gamut on other grooming tools.
I have the EquiGroomer and like it because it isn’t as messy as the old-fashioned curry, which I did last night. I hate having hair stuck all over my clothes.
Here’s a link to a website with directions to make your own. I haven’t tried it, but maybe someone who is more of a DIYer would like to try it. http://www.budgetequestrian.com/diy-shedding-tool-horse/
I have a SleekEZ and I think it works better because the teeth on the blade are finer and closer together than those on a traditional shedding blade. It pulls more hair and dander off at once. I also think it is a little easier on their skin because it’s not as “pokey” as a shedding blade.
That said, I find that a traditional shedding blade works better on thick mud than the SleekEZ does, so I often use a blade first and then the SleekEZ if my horse has been rolling outside. My shedding blade stays in my tack trunk all year because of the mud factor. My SleekEZ gets stored once shedding season is over.
I prefer both to curry combs because they are self-cleaning–I don’t have to stop and pick hair out of them.
As to getting hair all over yourself, there is a woman at the barn that wears what looks like a hazmat suit when she body clips! It slips on right over her clothes…
The best thing i have is by Andis, but it is modeled like a Furminator. it literally pulls out extra hair, and i love it. So if it ever breaks, i’ll be getting a furminator. ( i think this was discontinued, but it was worth the $35)
You don’t need a SleekEez or a Furminator. Just an old, used rasp that your farrier will probably give to you for free! Tilt it on edge and gently drag across your horse. Jeremy Cluff & J Diamond J Horse Training on FB shows you how and it sheds out horses exactly like a SleekEZ. Even if you bought a new, cheapo rasp (around $9) that is still less than the gadgets!!
