Alpharetta, Canton, Marrietta Trainers Georgia
If you’ve got some free time, I’d go to Atlanta Winter II. I was there showing last weekend and most of the barns there were from the area. That might be a good place to start looking… that way, you can meet the trainers and see students in action. Maybe call ahead at a few places and say you’ll be there and you’d be interested in getting to know more about their operations.
Great suggestion.

Any great instructors out there in Georgia, specifically Canton, Alpharetta or Marrietta? Need an instructor with a great resume i.e. has proven to have results with their clients not only locally but nationally.
can I ask something ?

why do you want a trainer who is know nationally for their clients (which implies they show w/or under them) but you don’t want to show…?

Tamara

I’m not the OP, but from my perspective…it is a way to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.

true dat;)

but then to get seemingly traumatized later that all they “want to do is go to shows” seems silly…

after all going to shows is one business model and not going to shows is another…

when you coming down to River Glen/The South again…?

My horse was there! But I wasn’t sniff… What did you show in? He did the baby green and another that I think was called Young Hunter or something…

ETA: I’m a moron, he was in Aiken. Edit again - and it wasn’t last weekend, but the weekend before. I work way too much…

There are lots of really good trainers in our area, many who have had much national success, including Pheobe Loughrey, Pheobe herself rode as an A/O back in the day, and now she has a client base who she is helping win at the locals and USEF AA shows as well as indoors.

The Boggios are based here as well, and are amazing riders, the Lands also are based here, amazing riders, the list is very long of good trainers and riders in our area.

Terry Brown has a incredible back ground. Julie Curtin has trained many really nice horses.

Anne Kenan is another really great trainer based here, she trained Laura Kraut and her sister when they were riding ponies and junior hunters.

I would like to show in the future. I don’t want to learn from someone who doesn’t even keep up with the bigger shows. I would like to get an idea of what to expect before purchasing a horse to do 3’ potentially 3’6". There are barns out there that have lesson people that don’t show, and clients that show successfully at the higher levels. They may have a different trainer for those people but that’s how you get your foot in the door. I am looking at this as a long term commitment. When I get where I am financially comfortable and my riding ability is up to par I will purchase and show.

GingerJumper- I will definitely have to do that. I didn’t think of that! Thanks!

Thank you for all the great suggestions.

Does Southern Pines count as The South? If so, Feb 11-18th!

Phoebe’s students have had significant wins at many national shows. One of her students has won the zone finals the past 2 years, gone to Devon and qualified for both Indoor shows. That is in just the first two years since her shingle has been put back out.

If you looked for her horses in the USEF records - you won’t find much. She has been training other peoples horses, ponies and students. Check it out at www,PLstables.com.

Thanks!

Is this Phoebe talking about HERSELF in the third person? I am so confused.

Big names and big shows for clients does not always a great trainer make. One of the trainers mentioned in this thread, without knowing anything about me or my riding except me telling her I was an adult re-rider just back into riding for about 6 months, insulted me when I was looking for a horse a few years ago. She (or one of her clients) had one for sale that I inquired about. Told me that at my level, I couldn’t handle anything less than a 20-year-old horse, and that I should probably even consider getting one that was “a little lame.” Really??!

PaintedHunter I am sorry to hear that. I hope you found what you were looking for! Why do some people have to be that negative!
Benni thank you for clearing some of the information up! Sounds like your doing well!
My best bet is to just go find out at the shows who seems to fit my style. I am glad there have been so many to answer the thread because that means there are many places to choose from of great quality!
Thank you

Oh my, that is awful!! I did have a trainer tell me my horse was a honda and everyone else was on a lexus. And I said do you think he jumps good? She said “yes”, DO you think he moves good? “Yes” Do you think I can win on him? “Yes”, then I’ll ride my honda, thx. Never went back to that trainer again.

That’s terrible too! You don’t need an expensive horse to win- just a good one  I did end up with a great horse- he’s green, though, and we’ve gone through our trials and tribulations of him being an idiot, but he’s MY idiot. And even though he’s a paint (another HONDA of horses, right? LOL), he has BEAUTIFUL movement and a whole heap of potential.

HAHA! love the Honda Lexus analogy! Why is it that some trainers and barns get so bent out of shape if a horse has no papers or came from a ‘bad situation,’ it’s just not good enough. If it’s a nice horse it’s a nice horse. I bet you had quite the pimped out Honda! Money doesn’t mean quality all the time. I wouldn’t have gone back to that trainer either. It’s important to have a trainer who wholeheartedly believes in you and wants only the best, if you want to succeed. Who knows your Honda could be a Lexus in a judges eyes.

Lol, my trainer thinks I’m nuts for selling my WB aka The Lexus and keeping my paint… let’s call him a Station Wagon… but hey, Station Wagons are comfortable!

Yea, one of my favorite moments was when we won the hack in Ocala in the Adults, there were 46 horses in the class, try to stand out with that many horses in the ring;), no they did not split the class or hack half at a time, we all went around at once! And he was an OTTB, for all of you OTTB fans! It was not back in the day either, it was 2007.
You get it Equistar, the trainer has to believe in you! Feel free to PM me for any recommendations on trainers, or brain storming;)

HAHAHA! I loved my stationwagon! Great car
