Altech National Horse Show

Question–how much do they judge the canter? Because they only seem to canter for about 2 seconds/half a lap?
The trot is certainly the emphasized gait. The canter needs to be on the correct lead. For some judges that is good enough. Other will look for and reward straightness, a decent, consistent speed, being mannerly in the bridle, and an appearance of being easy to ride at the canter (especially in a pleasure class, ladies’ class or junior exhibitor class).

And I noticed at the Worlds Championship as well that they don’t really change gaits when told? They keep trotting long after they call for the walk, and don’t necessarily start cantering when asked? And some take several laps at the trot before lining up? Is that not considered breaking the gait?

No. A Saddlebred class is not a command class. You do not have to execute the call immediately when you hear it. Ringmanship is a huge factor in showing a Saddlebred. So you choose when and where to do your transitions to best show your horse. However trotting for a very long time once the line up is called has a name (“showboating”) and you will notice some judges purposefully look down at the card once they have called for the line up. They’ve seen what they want to see, they don’t want any showboating.

Why are there so few entrants in these classes?

I think when the judges know, they know as well as being somewhat cautious with that one horse who was more hand galloping than cantering so I think they shortened it. Plus only 3 in the class so easier and quicker to judge.

Now, your 2nd comment is my biggest PET PEEVE…I know they tae an extra lap before lining up to give the judge that one last loo but it’s ridiculous when they pass the ring master 2 times. Many of the performance horses don’t do a real flat wal so it appears that they are always trotting biut that is somewhat acceptable. But after finishing gaits on the first way of the ring, they’re reversing before the announcer says too. These horses anticipate everything…they know walk, trot, slow gait, rac and canter for five gaited and the three gaits for three gaited. I think they should mix up and do a canter before a trot, etc. and then see!!

Did I miss the switch already!?

Anyone else just lose sound?

Thanks for explaining Renae and Road Apples. The rules are definitely different! If you went around twice more in a hunter/equitation under saddle you’d probably be excused.

They are setting the course for anyone who wants to watch the saddlebred/jumper swap class!

This show hasn’t really gotten a foothold on the Saddlebred circuit yet, and doesn’t fit into our schedule very well. We just had a national level show last week, The Mane Event in Springfield, IL (where the Good Hands Finals, which was once held at the National Horse Show, is now held) and Nov 12-16 is the UPHA American Royal National Championship Show, the second biggest show of the year on the Saddlebred circuit.

In Black Beauty is that what they were talking about being pulled very tight for “fashion” for Beauty and Ginger who were more hunter type horses?
Exactly what I was thinking, Black Beauty immediately came to mind. I am loving the feedback from Renae and Road Apples about saddlebreds and harness horses/ponies. For years I watched them at MSG but had no idea what I was seeing.
