Amerigo? PLUS finding used Hennigs? UPDATE: bought a saddle

UPDATE: I just purchased a lovely used Hennig classic, which I loff! Thank you all so much for your help!

I found a good deal on a used Amerigo that looks quite interesting, however I’ve only sat in one once and I though it was nice but that the leather felt crumby. This one looks like it has nice leather but I, again, have no real personal experience with them.

How do you like them? Are they comfortable for 3rd-ish level work?

How do they compare to other brands (at my barn we mostly have Hennigs, Schleeses and DKs so any reference to them would be very good)

OR ALTERNATIVELY

Does anyone have a good source for USED Hennigs? They are my first choice, but I’m having a heck of a time trying to find a used one that is reasonably priced. Anybody have a secret stash? I’ve already emailed basically everyone with Hennigs that come up on the first 2-3pages of google. Some interesting leads but nothing right
I need a 17.5" seat, 16"-ish flaps, exposed thigh roll model, a med-wide tree setting is ideal but I have a saddle fitter who will adjust to my horse when the saddle gets here. Any ideas?

I know some people that where reselling them here where buying them from German classifieds online and the German version of ebay…could be risky but probably your best bet for a secret stash they go for about $2500 used in Germany my cousin is there and says they turn up in the local tack shops on consignment but mostly are in the classifieds  There is a 16.5" on there now for about 2K like new from what I see on the photos - my cousin paid 4200 euros for hers new.

I have heard good things about Amerigo & Hennig you may also want to look at Max Benz, I think you have to ride them first to see what seat, twist, you find comfortable not every saddle no matter how popular works for every rider.

What do you consider reasonable for Hennigs? I have one as does the other trainer and a client of mine, the range we paid for a used saddle was $3,000 to $4,000. They vary in style. Matowah Meadows sells a lot of them if you know what you want you can get it on ebay at times. There is also someone in FL that sells them. Just have to wait for the right one to come along.

I got my (new) Hennig from EuroAmerican Saddlery. They were great to work with. They may have used Hennigs…they seem to sell pretty quickly. My horse really likes the saddle and so do I

I have an Amerigo Vega and the leather is yummy.

Yeah, by reasonable I mean I was hoping to find one for roughly $3000 US, but hey- if I can find cheaper I’ll take it!

I’m going to call EuroAmerican and see what they have, and I’ll check German ebay/classifieds

Thanks for the help!

Anyone else have anything to say on the Amerigo saddles?

I have a new Amerigo Cortina (I believe thats how its spelled its been a while since I had to!) and I LOFF it!! The leather is oh so lovely and I literally do ride so much better in it b/c it properly fits me and my horse.

And you can check with Ann @ Equestrian Imports for used Amerigos AND Hennigs.

I don’t have an Amerigo dressage saddle, but do have a Deep Jumping saddle. It is wonderful and was comfortable from day one. I have had a fitting with an Amerigo dressage (close contact) saddle and will probably get one in the future. I lost my mare last year and her baby is coming 3, so it will be a while before I get one.

we have 5 Amerigo’s in the barn…it’s our saddle of choice. I ride my schoolmaster in an Amerigo. I would love a Hennig some day, but honestly, the Amerigo fit’s a lot of people and horses…no one has complained here about riding in them!

Check out…

Trumbull Mountain carries Amerigos

Are you sure Trumball carries Amerigo dressage? I looked at their site, and they sell the Vego and the Amerigo jumping, but I don’t see dressage saddles.

I really like the looks of the Amerigo Close Contact. Has anyone seen or ridden in one?

I have one. love it, but it doesn’t fit my horse (they run a little narrow) and I have to say, it’s been really difficult to sell even in better-than-demo condition.

FWIW, Amerigo DOES have regional reps. I know someone locally who’s bought a jump saddle and a dressage saddle through the rep. So if you need more personal attention, you can get it.

I have Amerigo Vega Mono flap and the saddle is beautiful, leather is very soft, and it is very comfortable. The saddle fit both my very different built TB’s. Unfortunately it didn’t fit my big WB but nothing really did so I had a custom saddle made for him. I did continued using Amerigo for my TB. However after riding in the custom saddle that was made for me and my WB I have had a hard time transitioning from that saddle to Amerigo. I love both my saddles but I am having a difficult time transitioning from Custom to Amerigo and vice versa. The two saddles are very different they both put me in a different position so I have decided to part with my Amerigo and break my bank to get another custom saddle that is identical to the one I have for my WB. Sadly I will be selling it in a few weeks on eBay.

When I had my custom saddle made I showed the saddler my Amerigo and said make it just like this one. He smiled and said it will look like your Amerigo but will feel different because it will fit you better than Amerigo and he was right. I am only 5’1 and I have big horses so finding a saddle that fit’s me right and my horses at the same time is very difficult. I have tried many saddles and Amerigo was the only one that fit me and my horses well without making a custom saddle.

Amerigo Vega goes for $2700 retail, which I think is their less expensive model. They don’t really loose the value used. My saddler that made my custom saddle said out of most saddles that he has ever worked on Amerigo was by far the best made saddles on the market. He said that even those saddles over $4000 are not made as good as this $2700 saddles. However his opinion is based on the structure and how it’s made as well as opinion of his customers.

There were a bunch of used Hennigs at the Gold Coast Opener…

Amrigos are nice, but the one style I rode in had way too big knee rolls for my taste. The leather is very nice!!! I wouldn’t say it worth the extra $$$, but it certinally is a nice saddle. It didn’t totally knock my socks off. It would be very nice for third lvl, espcially if you want the big knee rolls. FWIW, I LIKED the Laser better personally. It suited my leg better… It really depends on what you are looking for and what fits your horse. What really fit me best was the Stubben Scandica. Alas, I ended up with none of these…none of them worked for me.

I also think TM sells the Amerigo.

I used to ride in a Wintec 500 dressage because I hated the design and weight of the more expensive dressage saddles that I was tacking the boarder horses up with at the barn where I worked. A trainer of mine put one of her Amerigo dressage saddles on my QH who was hard to fit (He is 15.2hh and wheres an 80" blanket- very stocky & round). It not only fit him & I like a glove, but it really opened up his movement. Last year I took out a minor personal loan to buy a used Amerigo and haven’t regreted it. I LOVE this saddle and that says a lot since I really haven’t been impressed with most designs. I also found it to be lighter weight than most models. While I bought a classical Amerigo dressage, my trainer put a Close Contact dressage on him and it was just as nice. The Close Contact had a wider channel and seemed to be built for a wider horse.
