Amputation vs. euthanasia for a large breed dog

Tripods, as three legged dogs are called, do very, very well. I have fostered several post-op and they all had uneventful recoveries and went on to live great lives.

If one of my own dogs needed a leg amputated, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second.

Thank you all for the replies. My sister said they were very helpful! I don’t want to leave you hanging, so…

Unfortunately, x-rays revealed suspicious shadows on Lexie’s lungs and a large mass on her thyroid. With this further information in hand, they have made the difficult decision to euthanize next week. I know my sister is heartbroken. :frowning:

Oh, what a shame. So sorry for your family. Right decision, though.

Three legs is more than enough legs for a dog. Four legs is just be’in fancy.

I was almost eaten by a 3 legged Great Pyrenees. He moved pretty quick on 3 legs as I ran for my life back to my car! He seemed just fine with his situation. Me on the other hand…[/QUOTE]

There was a Great Pyrenees at a rescue I worked at. He had nerve damage in his leg and barely used it. He ran around just fine.

If the dog is already on 3 legs most of the time, if the leg is gone, the adjustment will be easy.

ETA: I just read your update. Sorry for the bad news :frowning:
