Anhidrosis - One AC vs. Platinum Refresh

YAY! I’m glad you have good results!

It was 90 and humid on Saturday and Tip tolerated an hourlong ride. Granted that half of it was at the walk because going in a straight line is hard and no one has ever asked that of him before  but usually I’m lucky if he can give me half an hour at all in the summer. He doesn’t sweat “like a normal horse” still but he can walk himself to an appropriate respiration rate and his body temperature begins to return to normal before he goes to a cool shower. Really big improvement.

I’m glad I gave it a try.

So, Renn, are you using the Platinum Wellness as your v/m source? My guy has been on a ration balancer but I’m thinking that I will drop it since he’s getting the PP. I spoke to PP yesterday and they say that the Wellness covers all the bases nutritionally. I’m thinking the price is a bit more palatable if PP replaces my ration balancer, hoof supplement, and Omega Horseshine.

I am, on a temporary basis. It is a top dress over TC Lite. It’s a long story but the v/m supplement is in response to a current need rather than one I expect to continue. It was a case of “by the time I buy individual vitamin products I might as well get PP and spend less.”

I decided to try Refresh in part due to this thread. We’ve had some cooler weather in the last week since I started so I can’t really tell if it’s doing anything yet, but my not-picky horse really does not like the taste. He has been finishing less of his grain every day. Are others finding it pretty palatable?

My fatty who will eat literally any supplement or medication (will eat crushed up bute with his grain) no problem does NOT like the Platinum Refresh. So it must not be very palatable if my guy doesn’t like it. I have started adding water (could probably also use oil or even a little molasses to hide the taste) to help the powder stick to the grain. Otherwise he sifts through the grain until the powder falls to the bottom. Not his favorite thing ever, but you know Xerox if you would just sweat like a normal horse in the summer you wouldn’t have your food spiked and I would be saving $65 a month.

I add a handful of TC Senior to my horse’s grain to make a palatable porridge for him, and he takes the Refresh just fine that way. That said, some horses find electrolytes really irritating to the stomach. Libby, I don’t know if that could possibly be the case for your horse. I don’t find Refresh to smell like it would taste nasty, but I’m not your horse! Sorry yours isn’t a fan.

Renn: I’ve been doing the same with TC Senior but I am having to add a little more every day to get it into him! I agree it doesn’t smell strange. He has been on electrolyte powder and One AC before though and never had a problem with either. I might add applesauce or something so I can keep him on it at least long enough to decide if it’s doing anything.

I hope it works for you. I hate buying expensive things that turn out to taste nasty. (See also: the multi vitamin I bought for myself last week!)

Haha! At least you can decide to suck it up for a month or whatever. I try to tell horsie it will be good for him, but he just says no thank you…

Having used the voodoo patches for 10 days, I can report that Goober now has damp hair on his neck and flanks. I cannot decide if this is considered ‘sweating’. He does not have sweat between his hind legs, though.

Also interesting (to me) is that the hair under his saddle pad has faded out to an ugly tan. Last summer he faded, but not in a pattern. Anyone know if his sweat might contain some sort of fading component due to the patch (which was put on his butt, not under/near his saddle pad).

Right now Goober has:
Anhydrosis
PSSM
Sweet Itch (which has not made an appearance since 2015 because of “Goober’s Soon To Be Famous sweet itch fly spray”) — but I still treat him as if he does.
Exercise intolerance.

For a healthy horse he sure has a lot of problems.

LHU, if it makes you feel any better, I recently found myself listing off Tip’s various health conditions and made myself stop halfway through- the barn kids who had asked were getting very wide eyed. It’s better if I don’t just think about it. A horse of a venerable age is certainly allowed to have a condition or ten.

As for the fading, I would be inclined to expect that sweat is sitting there and not washing out. The salt can cause fading. Do you do a bath or rinse of any kind after work, or just hose off?

I’m bumping this up because I’ve seen a couple of anhidrosis threads in the last week or so.

Tip has been on Platinum Refresh since late April. He started at a dose of 1 scoop 2x/day, which is the amount recommended by weight. On that dose he would sweat by his ears and shoulders and under his tack, and lather between his hind legs and under my leg. I’ll be honest that after 10 years of anhidrosis I don’t remember what “normal sweat” looks like for this horse, because “normal” is none at all, but my impression is that he was producing thicker sweat with a more lathery character than his barnmates.

Whatever it was, it kept him him comfortable through about mid-July, when we had several weeks in a row at 80% humidity or more. The humidity is the real killer for him. During those weeks I did not ride and he lived under a fan from 8AM to turnout after 8PM, as did the rest of the barn. At temperatures of over 90, with humidity over about 60%, his sweating was impaired; he would get damp under his saddle and over his shoulders but nowhere else. After talking to the Platinum reps I increased his dose to a scoop and a half twice per day. They suggested doing so only on the hottest days of the summer and backing him down when it cooled off to reduce the odds of developing further tolerance. I did not see an increase in sweating with the higher dose. However, what I did notice is that his heat tolerance appeared improved regardless in comparison to previous years. His respiration returned to normal more quickly, and his body temperature dropped after one cool shower rather than several minutes of hosing and scraping. This is not scientific but anecdotal in comparison to years where he has been equally fit in summer.

Now that the humidity has dropped substantially for the moment he is back on the single scoop twice daily and continuing to produce appropriate sweat for his level of exertion, sufficient to maintain comfort in active exercise. He’s been able to remain fit through most of summer, rather than being let down, for the first time in several years.

I am pleased with the product and intend to continue it- I gave my remaining One AC to a barnmate. During late spring, early fall, and the milder periods of the summer, he sweats appropriately, and in the hottest months his ability to regulate his temperature is improved. However, given that August this year has been unseasonably cool and he developed tolerance in advance of the hottest months, then showed limited response to an increased dose, I may consider trying Let 'M Sweat or another product early next year to see if that can maintain sweat production at higher humidity levels.

This has been a very worthwhile experiment.
