Another Euro Trailer Thread - suspension height and tack rooms

Do you think you could do it with two horses? Losing that second stall and doubling the gear (let’s assume nothing shared between horses, but rider gear stays the same)?

I’m pretty sure I could make it work with the camper shell + tack locker for one horse. But I can already do that with my current rig - the idea is the Euro trailer for hauling two (since doing longer distances that way with this setup is pushing it on capacity more than I’d like).

I do not understand this but I will do more reading.

All three of my trailers need an 8 inch drop hitch. That has been the same despite using a variety of tow vehicles including two 3/4 ton Suburbans , two Lexus LXs, a Lexus GX, and a GMC2500HD. Now that does confuse me, that all six receiver tubes are at the same height above the ground. I suppose just coincidence.

No matter the rise or drop, the pitch angle of the trailer should remain horizontal. If it doesn’t, only then should the tongue weight on the hitch ball change.

Think of where the trailer pushes/pulls on the receiver when the drop is extreme. It’s putting a tremendous amount of torque on it. At some point, you should really consider a hitch stabilizer.

Exactly.

Extreme drop hitches can also contribute to instability and sway (just amplifying the typical amount present in a BP vs a GN). A hitch stabilizer is a great help for all of this.

(Remember that horses are live weight and do all kinds of crazy things back there, and are rarely a perfectly balanced load front to back)

If I had two horses all the tack goes in the tack compartment. The shavings are light but bulky - they’d go on the SUV roof rack. Feed and buckets etc in the LQ and hay in there too. Tack trunk (1) in the SUV with more hay. So I think it could be done but I would want to make sure weight was distributed in the right places. It would depend on how much hay was needed.

I don’t know if you’ll need to drop it as much as you think. My hitch has a max 5" drop and I don’t need to go all the way down for my Equi-trek. I’m pulling with a RAM 1500.

This is great! They look SO LOW in pics and I’m eyeballing measurements. My truck isn’t lifted so that helps.

Could you please post a link to some information about the setup in your photo. All I am finding are weight distributing hitches and the photo seems to be something that looks different from anything I’ve seen so far.

That’s not a weight distribution hitch, it’s a hitch stabilizer.

If it helps, you can find the hitch height for the EquiTrek somewhere on the interwebs. I believe it was nearly the same as my Brenderup which is 17-18in IIRC? That can help you “see” how much of a drop you’ll need.

Nothing relevant to add except I spent too many hours last night drooling over video tours of the Night Treka. A really slick use of space.

I tow a Brenderup with an F-150 which was quite a bit higher in the bed than my old Ram. I was able to fart around with the pins I had (3) and the one with about an inch of drop was all I needed. The F-150 is fairly high (or maybe not and I am just a stiff old lady with regards of getting in the bed…I need a step stool) and I thought I was going to have to get a big drop but no. The bottom of the bumper is 20 inches from the floor, the top of the pin is 16 inches.

As far as tack, I am only hauling one horse and I utilize the other stall for bulky stuff (shavings and hay). Or, if two horses (seldom), I use the truck bed. I have a lid on it so stuff will stay dry and not blow around.
