Another Men's Attire Thread

Wanabe,
If this hunt doesn’t let you have a scarlet tailcoat, you can always join an additional hunt, get your colors and then do the tailcoat with them. Lots of us hunt with 2 packs, some of us more than 2.:smiley:

Just make sure that the Master is cool with the concept before you buy the coat.

Hunter’s Rest – no problem, I’m not sure if I ever posted about getting my colors. I think the general consensus, then, is that many hunts allow gentlemen with colors to wear scarlet at the hunt ball even if they aren’t allowed to do so in the field. (?)

As others have said, best to ask your Secretary. But for comparison, while OCH only allows staff to wear scarlet in the field (members get buttons, not colors), gentleman with their buttons wear scarlet tailcoats with white facing to formal hunt events.

The consensus is that it is not appropriate for a gentleman without colors to wear scarlet at formal occasions.

In your case, since you have been awarded colors (congratulations!!!) but it is not customary for a gentleman to wear scarlet, you request permission to wear scarlet.

Either way - you request permission as it is not customary.

If a gentleman without colors, or who has been awarded colors but it is not customary for members to wear scarlet, and he’s dressing for a formal occasion, he wears a black tailcoat with white tie and facing.

Unless it is a black tie or semi-formal event in which case a tuxedo is appropriate.

This is just plain etiquette, long established traditions that go far beyond foxhunting - formal occasions for a hunt club just usually follow standard etiquette for formal occasions.

Since hunt clubs do develop their own particular customs over time (some clubs go back over 100 years), you’ll see some variations in things like buttons and whatnot.

So, unless YOUR hunt club has granted you permission to wear scarlet at a formal event, you do not wear it.

You wear the clothing suitable for a gentleman attending a formal or semi-formal event.

At High Holy Days a gentleman with colors who does not wear scarlet would wear a weaslebelly with colors on the collar.

(which is extremely elegant )

Or he could wear a frock. (It’s certainly cheaper than collecting different coats for different occasions…)

you know, all this talk makes looking for a formal gown look a lot less complicated.

Got it.

Whatever you end up wearing you MUST post pictures!

I’m jealous of everyone hunting today - it’s pouring here.

Brain Pain!

Wow, all this detail is making my brain hurt.
I’m not seeing an “abandoning” of pink coats in the field. Many just wear black on regular days and break out the pinques on joint/monster or special meets. Works for me.

Besides, we in the Snobbington Hunt all wear pinque…cuz we be stylin’ and we’re all “winters” and look good in red and…it’s easier to spot the dead bodies from the rescue helicopters… not usually a problem at the hunt ball!
