Any "activity" watches that allow disabling the pedometer?

Hmm interesting. I’ve never actually left my watch running so I’m not sure what would happen. I might test it just for fun. I have had generally very accurate GPS recordings, including while swimming.

I have the Garmin Instinct, which was designed for military/firefighters etc and is meant to be more rugged and withstand abuse. Figured it would have a better chance of surviving a barn environment. Of course, after I bought it I stopped riding and haven’t tested it out at the barn but I do use it constantly in the ocean and it’s held up fine to the salt water.

The counting steps in an activity is annoying. I do outrigger canoe paddling, the closest comparable activity that I use on the watch is stand up paddling. Neither activity involves any steps, yet I get done with an 8 mile paddle and somehow have walked 7800 steps.

I believe the Garmin pedometer function works via an accelerometer in the watch (as opposed to when you have it using GPS during an activity). Most pedometers on the wrist work the same way. So any sort of motion can get recognized as “steps”.

My company used to have an annual steps challenge (like most). It was always dominated by those who had long train commutes to and from the office each day…

The Apple Watch you can disable the tracker. Go into the Settings on your phone’s Apple Watch app and then it is in Privacy and then change it to not allow or something like that. I use to do it on mine before I would ride and then turn it back on after I was done riding.
