You got this. I hold my breath jumping in shows- I could do 3-4 jumps🤣 It’s the 8-10 I almost pass out.
LOL I hear ya sista!
This is a great idea. Does groundwork count towards the 100 or is it only riding?
Take my young mare to some shows. Not setting any specific goals around showing…I’ll be happy if we can just go out and do some schooling shows and lessons off the farm!
Last summer things were really coming together…allergy treatment was working and we were getting a normal canter that was controlled and balanced. I was thinking about some fall baby horse shows. Then in August she came up lame in the foot (farrier and shoe changes that were not planned…ugh!!!). It took until November to get all that sorted out. She is feeling really good…and I’ve never paid so much for shoes in my life! LOL But she’s sound (knock wood). Of course, all the work we did to get the canter balanced went out the window and I’m just starting that process back. But we will get there! So getting her out for some lessons and to start showing would be awesome for this year.
In prior years it was specifically riding but this is year 3 and it’s more of a set your own goal. If you’re on Facebook and want to join, just shoot me a PM and I’m happy to get you added in. It’s a couple hundred people each year and is an encouraging group.
I get the “precipice before oblivion” as that’s kind of where Feronia is. The past couple of weeks have been crazy or it’s been very cold, so.I haven’t seen her much, and feel bad about it. She turns 27 in May.
I suppose the goal of continuing to lose weight so I feel better sized for Lola is a good one. I would love to bring her back but finding a place that suits both our needs may be hard…She is definitely a “forage, friends, freedom” kind of gal, and that’s really hard to find here. Plus there is still the big question of whether I’m retiring or not.
Flying changes are the big goal for this year. My girl’s canter has gotten much stronger, so I’m hoping the changes aren’t too far off. If we can get those, then show third level at least once.
Lilo Fore will be here in July, so I’m hoping to have a chance to ride in that clinic, even if it scares me to death.
Get better at jumping courses and move up to 2’9". That was a goal this year, but need some more miles at 2’6".
Obtain a new dressage saddle. I’ve been working on this for a year and still don’t have one. Luckily my old saddle fits us, I just want something a little more supportive for the extended trot as my mare develops power.
Get a new horse. In 2023 I became horseless for the first time in almost 35 years. I really grieved the loss of that mare and decided to “wait and see” if I wanted to call it a day. A year-and-a-half later, I’ve figured out that I’m not ready to be “done.”
During this horseless time, I’ve not missed the worry (Is he off? Which blanket? Is she sweating normally? I have to go get feed! Hay is how much?), but I’ve missed everything else—the fellowship of my horse friends, the physical labor (I’ve fallen apart), the peace, the purpose…
So horse shopping I go. And, actually, based on my horse shopping experiences so far, my resolution should be to not go batty while horse shopping (but that’s another thread).
Happy New Year, everyone!
Baby horse turns 5 this year, so the goal is to start getting him out competing. Hopefully we’ll be able to aim for TIP Championships this fall and/or regional dressage championships, and I’m considering taking him to the educational 3-day in Florida in November - I think I have a couple friends going, so that could be fun. Non-competition wise, he also needs to get out hacking and start learning how to trail ride, so I need to do my homework and find some good trail riding buddies to take him out with.
Farm-wise, we need to finish the barn and the fencing, get some loads of sand to address some wet spots, and keep working on developing the pastures (weed killing, seeding, fertilizing…). I also need to build some jump fillers so baby horse can jump something other than plain rails for practice
Aiming for a horseshow debut at the end of May.
I’ve been saying for years I’m going to do it then let life get in the way, but I am bound and determined that this IS the year after everything that happened last year. You only live once!
I always start the year with way too many goals-
Do more equathons and endurance rides this year
Do some competitive trail drives (and take some driving lessons)
Get my young mare out and about more
Maybe try a driving derby
Do at least one camping trip that doesn’t involve competing
