Well I can tell you that 2 out of 12 horses at our farm died from contaminated feed. 2 others got sick. Not a single one of the remaining 8 showed any signs. We did not hear of any other issues in the area.
Our vet told us with an extruded feed, only a half of pellets in the feed may be an issue but it would have been enough to do damage.
Its awful that any horses died or got sick, but if I was the Plaintiff in this case (don’t know who the feed company was that you are alluding to in this case) I would say it would be completely and totally impossible to prove the feed itself was at fault, if only 2 out of 12 died, 2 got ill but recovered and no other farm was affected.
I also dont believe that Tribute produces an extruded “chunk” as other feed companies do, but someone please correct me if I am wrong if they do. The extrude the grains which are then formulated into a pellet (which many companies do) which is an entirely different process and one that is used extensively in the food production industry for humans as well (which IMO is a horrible practice but that’s for an entirely different discussions …)
So - if I was the Defendant in the case mentioned above and the burden of proof has to be on the Plaintiff to 100% prove the feed company was involved in the death of the 2 horses and not some contaminants contained on the farm itself, I would say it would be completely impossible to do. There would simply be no way at all of proving that …
For anyone interested in learning about the extrusion of grains used in probably 99% of our breakfast cereals we eat and our children eat, this article is eye opening for sure. All of the lobbying really needs to be done at the food production levels to eliminate this practice for good, but - as long as there are HUGE profits to be made in extruding the grain instead of actually adding REAL grain to the cereal we buy, it will continue on, all in the name of huge profits for the corporation and the shareholders …
