Anyone else love/hate having the barn favorite?

I have one that seems to be the horse show favorite. She was famous and successful long before this sack of potatoes sat on her back.
I do have moments of owner’s guilt at times where I think I am not living up to her potential, but then I remember that she’s a horse and I spoil her rotten. She’s also got a home for life and how many horses get that guarantee? I know she knows how to win and loves to do it and at the end of the day, it’s the magic of when we get it right that truly makes it special.
As for the select haters that look at me like I don’t either deserve her or can’t really ride bc she’s so laidback and easy, I’d gladly invite them to sit on some of the other tougher ones I’ve ridden in the past. Every bump in the road and detour has lead me to her… not sorry!

I was a horseless horse crazy kid that found out there were horses in GGP (this was in the 80s). I only visited the barn a few times, but a big black gelding named Dominic was my favorite. I didn’t pet or feed treats to anyone’s horses. I just admired as I walked by. I think the horses all had names on their stalls. I don’t know why that horse stood out. I think it was because he looked friendly and interested when people walked by.

Years later, as a teen, I had a horse of my own. I went college in another state, and a bunch of us had horses boarded in the college town. Imagine my surprise when I met the owner of Dominic. He was older by then but still a talented eventing horse. It was a neat coincidence.

My palomino gelding was always the barn favorite back when I boarded. He made faces and loved attention. No bad stall habits and was great in turnout with the other geldings. He was easy to catch and a gentleman to lead.

The other boarders were mostly adults and no one took out other people’s horses or fed treats.

I thought it was cute when I saw kids gathered by his stall giggling while he was hamming it up. The barn owner/trainer had rules and the kids respected her enough to follow them.

The motto of the Morgan Horse Association is " The Horse That Chooses You ." as very often the horse wants a relationship with you(g) and that is why it is their slogan

We have found them for the most part to be amiable even the ones that think they are not

I own the cute barn favorite. People love telling him how cute he is, giving him kisses and treats and telling me what he’s up to when I’m not there. I don’t mind having a few extra pairs of eyes looking out for him.

Feronia has been “a” favorite at several barns because her ground manners are very good, she doesn’t kick people or bite them, etc. She is easy to have around, as long as one remembers that she does. not. share her food, or her space, with other horses.

Lola is “a” barn favorite because she is so stinkin’ cute!

Niko is a barn favorite. Kind all day, no stall vices, etc.

I don’t think anyone’s ridden him without my permission (except once many years ago, and that was dealt with swiftly).

The BO’s grandkid when asked “what’s your favorite color?” “Brown”. Why brown? “Because Niko is brown.”

Consider the alternative. Having a horse that everybody can’t stand, causes issues in the barn, destroys fences, does structural damage to buildings, fights with other horses, and terrorizes the Barn staff. Thank your lucky stars.
