Anyone have a dog with "Idiopathic Seizures"??

Well it depends to some extent what you are calling “adult”…idiopathic epilepsy can present up until age 5. If your dog has a 1st seizure after age 5 then yes, it is unlikely to be a hereditary form of epilepsy but a seizure from another cause.

My dog is 7 years old as I wrote in an earlier post. Yes, cbd oil is the "medical marijuana but is sourced from hemp. and is legal to buy the line or in many stores. I got mine from Prana pets online, 350 mg. I found them to be a reputable source

How do you figure an appropriate dosage?? By weight or one size fits all. I’d certainly try it. My dog averages 4 to 6 weeks between seizure episodes…then has a cluster over one day of 4 to 8…no pattern.

I mention the ear correlation because around the time she has an episode…she rubs or “asks” us to rub one of her ears. I clean them weekly and there is no sign of infection/smell…just a small amount of wax. Following a run of seizures I put her on a 7 day treatment of SMZ’s and the seizures stop…for another month+. My GSD was put on phenobarb for his seizures…his got REALLY ugly…he was a trained personal protection dog/attack dog and in a post seizure state while he was “altered” he was potentially dangerous. He never DID anything bad…but I was the ONLY person allowed to be near him until he regained normalcy. He got pretty darn scary!! I also saw the connection between his ear issues and his seizures and finally found a vet who agreed. The phenobarb made him like a zombie…careful maintainence of ear health and I was able to wean him off the phenobarb and he lived a healthy, seizure-free life to 15 years. THAT is why I make the connection between ears and seizures!! It doesn’t hurt to keep the ears treated!

My JRT is on CBD oil as well but we have kept him on the phenobarbital since he is older nad done well. I use the 400 mg from Healthy Hemp which I found recently at a pet expo. Most products will have dosing info on the bottle and/or the site. The 400mg dose in this brand is 3 drops per 10 lbs every 4-8 hrs so I do the 3 drops in his food AM/PM and he’s doing well. As an aside my rescue mutt mix tried it Sunday for car ride anxiety/ car sickness, 10 drops of CBD oil and we had a nice car ride and no sickness. CBD oil is definitely worth looking into.

P.S. Here’s the Health Hemp website if you’re interested https://healthyhemppet.com/

THANK YOU!!!

Dosage is by weight and varies with the. Concentration of the product If you google dog seizures and cbd oil, you’ll find a lot of info my 28 lb 7 year old corgi never started phenobarbital meds but hasn’t had any more seizures while being on the cbd oil. Of. Course, I can’t say that’s what caused the seizures to stop but I will continue it

Yes I agree that at 7 it is not likely to be inherited epilepsy, but a 2 year dog is considered an adult, and that definitely could be idiopathic epilepsy. That’s all I’m saying; in your case I agree with your vet if he had his first seizure after the age of 5.

Thanks for the info. I learn a lot from coth
