As big a registry as the AQHA, which also means a huge number of unregistered stock horses (whether nobody bothered to register the foal, or the foal isn’t registerable) I would assume some stock horse breeding unless proven otherwise. And unless I’d also known that horse for years, knew how he was managed, knew he’d never had any issues, I would make a 5 panel a purchase contingency, just as I would make a negative PSSM1 test a contingency for any draft or cross
that sounds smart. And the definition of “stock horse” is QH, Paint, Appaloosa? Thanks!
Anything that even remotely looks like a qh, or appendix (which can look like TBs honestly).
Yes, QH, Paint, Appendix, App
A “full” QH can look like a TB. Most HUS horses these days might as well be a TB
Many reining horse ads today have a line “5 panel negative”.
Seems standard for the better reining horses.
I depends. How old is the horse? What’s their history? Training leve? Price point? How motivated is the seller? What’s the market like?
Buying any horse is always a gamble and you have to weigh the pros and cons depending on the situation and your own risk tolerance.
The market these last couple of years has been very hot in my area and green grade horses easily sold for high fours/low fives in days. You wouldn’t have a chance if you wanted to make an offer contingent on a 5 panel, there would be a line of buyers behind you who wouldn’t care.
Now the market seems to be softening so maybe it could be worth a try?
If the horse has been in work for a few years and showing no symptoms, I would be less worried and more inclined to take the gamble if I really liked it and the price was fair.
I gave up on a quarter horse foal I liked a lot because I could not get a straight answer on the dam’s testing status. I’m not screwing around with a mystery like that. I ended up walking and buying something else because I couldn’t get a damn answer. AQHA people can be a real pain about this.
Some can be. If the dam was actually tested through AQHA (UC Davis), the results would have been on file even if they didn’t know them off hand. A phone call would have gotten them the answers they needed to give to you.
ETA: I likely would have walked away too, unless I really loved the horse, then I would have called AQHA myself.
No - I was referring to Princess in Diamonds who is the dam of Whizkey N Diamonds, Cromed Out Mercedes, Surprizintheprincess, and Epic Titan.
Mr Impressive! He was always one of my favorite horses to drool over in the magazines. Wish I’d had a chance to see him in real life when he was in his prime.
Couldn’t even get her AQHA name. Just entirely gave up. I can’t be bothered to do that much legwork when I can move on to another foal. Which is exactly what I did. Maybe for a going horse I’d care more to dig around for answers but foals are not rare and I didn’t need this particular one.
I definitely would have walked from that situation too! Too many nice horses out there with honest owners.
