I do not remember a La Phaedra. You mean the breeder of Kapital Gains in Northboro or the person who bought him and later stood him/?
I thought she was his breeder, as I believe she owned his dam also. Perhaps she bought the two of them? She was in Sturbridge IIRC, not Northboro. SHe sold him after he was bred to Phaedra, but the breeding didn’t take so we had to truck her to Oswego, NY to be bred back.
Fun thread. The Arab shows in the 80’s were a lot of fun! Big shows, big classes, big money with the sweepstakes and Star World shows/programs… we often had 500 horses at our regional shows!
The Scottsdale All-Arabian show was, and remains, something to be seen before you gallop off into the horsemen’s sunset… the old auctions were more Vegas than horse, but it all still worked for quite awhile.
Isn’t it amazing how many different (and differing) breeds there are, to make sure there’s something for everyone who might ever have a horse in their heart.
Ah. He was born in Northboro and I thought he had sold before she moved to Sturbridge. She was a bona fide nutjob. Started out with nice horses and turned into a hoarder who terrible neglected her horses. I reported her to the SPCA when she was in Stubridge after trying to help her. She fled to Maine when the heat got to hot in Sturbridge then when they ran her out on the rail in Maine she took off for Montana.I can only hope her animals have lots of pasture and running water so they have a chance. Awful situation.
Oh my, I had no idea. That is terrible. We went to her farm 3 or 4 times to try horses, and pick up Phaedra. The barn was clean and at least the horses inside had seemed content when we were there. I had heard that she got out of Arabs and into spotted asses when she moved north. Not sure if that is accurate or not. She did have some very nice horses. We looked at Capitol Gains dam to buy, I loved her. I wish they could have afforded her but she was out of their price range.
Khalico. Yeas she was a wonderful mare. And you probably went when she had just moved.
Ruth moved to Sturbridge and then started breeding donkeys. She bought another Arabian stallion so then had two even though she could not sell anything. She then bred him to anything that came into heat. She never handled the foals, many weren’t even trained to lead. She had over 40 horses and donkeys on that property. I was shocked when I stopped to visit, the barn door had a padlock on it and she would not come to the door until she saw it was me, she was hiding from the SPCA or bill collectors I think. Horses were thin, matted tails and mains, untrimmed feet. 4-5 untrained stallions in the barn standing in stalls that clearly had not been cleaned in months and who knows if they ever went outside, if they did she would have had to bring everyone in then just open the door and let them out loose. Beautiful but wild boys. She stiffed the vet for thousands and horses did ot even have basic shots and had not had their feet done in ages. It was truly shocking.
I started trying to help by going out and strippingout one or two stalls a day, then I’d go back, clean the ones I had stripped and then strip one or two more. It was awful work. After about a week she complained that I was coming and only cleaning the “good” stalls, if you can imagine I was driving 40 minutes each way to clean her shit that she had not cleaned in months and months, for no pay and not even for someone to be remotely thankful, instead she was the same difficult and entitled person I had experienced falling out with before over her treatment of me. So, I was done, that is when I called the SPCA and told them which stalls to look in and how to actually catch her in the barn. They really should have taken all her animals, it certainly would have been justified but instead they negotiated with her to place one or two of the worst ones. I think the SPCA maybe did not have the resources to deal with so many but I was pretty disgusted by thier lack of action. To this day I wonder about the animals in her care and how many die in the cold Montana winters.
Oh man, that is terrible. She must have just moved because the place was not in bad shape as i recall, although I was in high school at the time and, may have just been to awe struck to notice. How very tragic, and even more so that the SPCA didn’t do more. Thank you for at least trying to help, even though your efforts were unsuccessful. It is sad that KG went somewhere better to only be lost to an accident. I wish the efforts to save him had been successful.
