Arena Dust Control Products

I use the MAG flakes as they seem to be superior to the other types (two) I have tried and they store well.

MgCl is less corrosive to metal and concrete than CaCl or ordinary salt, but I do find that my arena drag gets a light layer of rust on it. It doesn’t concern me as it would be slightly rusted by now anyway. I just rinse it off now and then.

If you have kick boards in your arena then the steel of your building will be quite safe.

I haven’t watered my indoor in almost a year and the footing is nicely moist as well as completely dust free.

Watermark - could you please let us know how the Whoa Dust product worked for your outdoor arena?

I have $900 worth of Whoa Dust sitting in a box in my bedroom. AKA…I haven’t installed it yet. The reason is because I added geotextile to my footing this summer and I have a little tweaking (add a transfer load of fines) to do as the footing is still too loose. And I need to contact Whoa Dust people and ask them if the application is different now with felt in the mix…

As I’m now fond of telling people, creating good arena footing is like cooking by feel with $20,000 worth of ingredients.

I plan to do a large test patch with the Whoa Dust before going full monty on it. I’m a little nervous about it as the small test patch I did was kind of ‘gummy.’

I have to say that the man at Whoa Dust was very helpful over the phone and spent quite a lot of time talking to me about my arena and telling me how the product works and what it works best with and why.

Bumping this up again… I started calling around to get pricing to purchase the product, and apparently the MAG Flakes are very hard to come by right now.

Does anyone know of a supplier that has any in stock?

Any update on the Whoa Dust? I am especially interested in how it works with felt/GGT footing. I am happy with my footing and don’t want to mess it up. Thanks!

I use ArenaKleen on my outdoor (and indoor when first put in). An application lasts about 3-4 years. However, it’s gotten very expensive since i put my arenas in 6 year ago…am saving this winter so next spring we can treat the outdoor again.

I use liquid Mag for the indoor…but have been less than pleased at the results. It’s less expensive but requires application about every 3-4 months. Being from E TN we don’t use the Mag for freezing but rather for dust control.

Hope this helps!

PS: I too have the GGT fibers and silica sand…installed in Nov 2008 and I am still thrilled with the footing.

Unfortunately I have no experience with the Whoa Dust products.

I was able to purchase a pallet of MAG Flakes, which arrived last week, and we started applying it today. Fingers crossed that it works as well as I’m expecting!

ETA that I looked into the Whoa Dust, but the website states that it lasts “up to 16 months”. The Mag Chlor seems to be less expensive in the long run, even with adding a few extra bags periodically.

I have had sand and rubber in my indoor for 25 years. Roughly once a year I spread four large bags of either calcium or sodium chloride. I do this by hand with the wheelbarrow and a shovel. I broadcast it in a large circle around me. This usually costs me about $60 and takes half an hour to do.

Usually I am the only one riding on the outdoor so dust has never been a problem. I just have sand and screenings on a gravel base.
