Phar Lap, if you are Australian.
I want to ask my non-horsey teenage students this question on Monday, because I guarantee they don’t know Secretariat, Man o’ War, or even Mister Ed!
I can’t even imagine what they may answer.
I can’t answer for others, but my favorite story is that of Harry DeLeyer and Snowman.
Harry passed away last year, at 93yo. Just FYI.
When I was a kid, it would have been Misty of Chincoteague.
And then the Black Stallion (and Black Minx).
And then it would be “Old Bones,” the stable name for Exterminator. There was a book I read when I was in elementary school: Old Bones.
And then I got around to Man O’War, Seabiscuit, Whirlaway, and Native Dancer.
I only read that book once, when about 8 and I still remember it–especially his friendship with his pony pal.
Well, I just asked DH and he said Secretariat. In a “duh who else” voice, LOL.
When I saw the title of this thread the first name that came to mind was Man O’ War and the second was Secretariat.
First name to come to my mind was Black Beauty, but I’m betting most people would say Secretariat.
I read Old Bones in grade school too.
My mom says Trigger. We are guessing my dad will say Mr. Ed but he’s still sleeping so she will ask when he wakes up.
I would have said Man O’War or Secretariat.
Trigger was the first name that popped into my head.
I also got Seabiscuit from my SO.
I will be interested to learn what they say!
So far one non-horsey friend has said Trigger; another has said Mr Ed (and he’s in England, where the program was on as it was here)
Two have said Secretariat; another said, as I did, Man o’ War.
This is interesting!
So did I.
I thought of him too, and wondered if anyone else had.
Cool.
Fun!
I’m going to go with real-life horses rather than fictional ones.
DH said Secretariat, because one of my Ottbs had Terlingua / Secretariat in her papers.
Then, being French, and married to me, he said Galoubet .
He has been heavily influenced, over 32 years of marriage, haha!
Me? I would say Jappeloup. But then I am biaised…
Fictional ones, I would say the Black stallion. I loved those books, as a kid. Read them all. and when I was really young, it was Poly, the Italian pony!
I just asked my SO and his immediate answer:
“Secretariat. Who else could it even be?”
I gave him specific instructions before asking that it has to be a real one, not a movie character or other fictional character.
Also for bonus points I asked who the second most famous horse is, and he immediately said “American Pharoah.” I love AP so much, he’s one of my absolute favorites, I’m so tickled that was his choice
I love that picture!
Asked various fam yesterday: The Black Stallion, Man O’War and Twilight Sparkle (My Little Pony).
SO said Black Beauty or Seabiscuit.
My husband really surprised me thinking it over for a minute and offering Sunday Silence.
Sunday Silence is in fact one of my all time favorite race horses, but I asked him why that was his pick. He remembered ESPN did a documentary on Easy Goer vs. Sunday Silence, and I guess that stuck with him. He also remembered the hype around that Triple Crown attempt from when he was a kid.
