I wish you would correct the thread title from “Clubbing” to “Cubbing” which I’m sure is what you mean.
Clubbing just sounds so brutal…
In fact the term Cub Hunting is now a relic. The universal term in USA is now Autumn Hunting.
So is the term “clubbing” less archaic?
I am curious as to where you got this information -
In fact the term Cub Hunting is now a relic. The universal term in USA is now Autumn Hunting.
Apparently your universal survey of hunts in the US missed a few.
For instance, Middleburg Hunt, whose calendar states: “First day of cub hunting Monday, September 5, at the Kennels at 7 a.m.” Every Virginia hunt whose website I checked refers to cubbing or cub hunting.
I understand that the term “cubbing” or “cub hunting” can have negative connotations. From the MFHA website:
Autumn Hunting - Very early in the year when hounds first start hunting. Young hounds are learning to hunt; older hounds are getting conditioned; young foxes are learning to evade hounds; and horses and riders are getting in shape. It is a time when hunt attire is rat catcher and the hunt usually doesn’t stay out as long for fear of exhausting young hounds. Autumn used to be called cub hunting or cubbing.
Kathy,
All well and good, but it hardly makes the term “universal.” Foxhunting is full of traditionalists and old farts who will continue to call it cubbing, negative connotations be darned. Is “autumn hunting” a better, more accurate and less controversial term? Probably. But don’t tell me the term is “universal”; because when I decided to so a quick check, Middleburg, Old Dominion, Piedmont, Keswick, Farmington and Deep Run all referred to cubbing. After 6 in a row I gave up. But notice I don’t claim that my 6 out of 6 sample makes it “universal” either.
You young 'uns get off my lawn, dag nab it.
Been awhile since I have been called young. Thank you
“Cubbing” or “cub hunting” is not nearly as negative a term as the word “clubbing” when used in a fox hunting thread, which is why I mentioned the unfortunate term in my post…
I don’t believe that fox hunters should pander to people that choose not to educate themselves as to what fox hunting in the U.S. entails.
“Clubbing” however has nothing whatsoever to do with the subject, so why inflame the uninformed sensibilities unnecessarily?
This is the change that was recommended due to antis twisting the phrase Cub Hunting to something brutal.
I’m off your lawn. If I misspoke by saying universal I apologize however I was instructed to make the change on all our Hunt material on the Internet. The recommendation came from higher up than my dear Masters.
It is a new recommendation so the Virginia hunts will make the change in a 150 years or so. I lived there for 18 years.
SLW,
Sorry to be so tetchy. Some time ago, on another equestrian BB, someone who had hill-topped a couple of times as a guest at a Midwestern hunt informed the board’s audience that US hunts were all drag hunts, that no one hunted live fox anymore. My initial reaction was “Won’t the huntsman be surprised when I tell him!”
And 150 years might be an aggressive timeline for Virginians. We are, after all, still fighting the War of Northern Aggression.
FWIW: I assumed the “clubbing” was either a typo or auto-correct. My phone always changes “cubbing” to “clubbing”.
It’s all good! Fox hunting does have curious terms if you are a laymen. Imagine an image of your guest above talking about drag hunting at bridge or a PTA meeting outside of Virginia. Pearls would be clutched.
I do stand corrected by labeling it universal. I interpreted my memo that way which is clearly incorrect.
