aureomycin and horses
Huh?? They’re medicating horses without the owners permission? I’d personally have a huge issue with that. If the horse doesn’t have a bacterial infection they should not be getting an antibiotic imho! I would be concerned about the effects on the gut flora and antibiotic resistance as well.

What do they mean by ‘winter colds’??
I agree. Idiots are running that barn, and medicating a horse without owner’s knowledge and permission is a huge no-no, IMO.

Sure don’t see a picture of a horse on that package
Since it is intended for cattle, it could have residue of other feed additives for cattle, that are toxic to horses, Move outta there ASAP.

The possibility of contamination is really small. It is most likely they are using the top-dress form of this drug. In that case contamination would have to occur during manufacturing, which would be extremely unlikely.

It is possible they are including it in a pre-mix from a local mill, not super common for many boarding barns. There is a small chance that a pre-mix could be contaminated with other feed additivess but there are systems in place to prevent this and the risk is small.

The scenario is not out of the realm of possibility but there are much more pressing concerns in this situation.

ETA: not to make light of the contamination issues we have experienced lately or the concern. The feed contamination at the mill comes down to equipment failure or a breakdown in clean out protocol.

Yeh, and what else are they doing without the owners permission…that’s what I would be thinking as well.
