Baby Green Rules - MD/PA

Quick question on the rules of the baby green division - I show in MD and PA.

I know that Baby Green specs are set by show/state organization, since it’s an unrated division.

I looked up the PSHA rules and it is a horse in their first or second year of showing.

I couldn’t really find anything definite per MHSA. (very well could be overlooking it) We normally show at McDonogh/Prince George’s. My trainer is thinking it is a horse in their first year of showing. I am assuming that year is horse show year, so silly question asking this one, but just so to speak, what if horse showed in Baby Greens in April of 2016, would he be able to compete in the division until April of 2017? (it would be nice for the horse to get the exposure at the 2’6" with other young horses.

Can any one clarify to make it a little more black and white for me? Is my horse allowed to show in the Baby Greens one more year?

It doesn’t make a huge difference for me. I know McDonogh and Price George’s offer a wide variety of 2’6" classes. He will eventually be moving up to the 2’9" but I would like to know just for my own self

Thank you!

Regardless of the specs, a “year” is never 12 months from the time you first show in a division, so April 2016 to April 2017 would not be how you would measure the “first year” in the baby greens. A horse showing in the baby greens in April 2016 uses up its first year by the end of the 2016 show year, and 2017 would count as its second year of showing.

A prize list from an MHSA show should in theory describe the division, but if it does not, try emailing the association to ask if they have specs. If it is not a division they sanction/track points for, it may be left up to individual show management to define it.

Right - horse show year. I was just giving an example if it wasn’t.

Yep, horse show year one would be 2016 in your example and horse show year two is 2017 in your example, and then it all comes down to the specs, which they are apparently not making it easy for you to find  If it isn’t set by the state association, it could be anything goes – we took my baby horse to a local show this summer where the “baby greens” were open to any horse or pony, no restrictions at all!!

Hi there-- MHSA doesn’t track Baby Green points, so no specs from them. I wish they did! Most of the Maryland shows just have it listed as a 2’6" division for horses in the first two years of showing. Madison is spot on with how the years “count.”

I noticed some PA shows are now offering a 2’9" division for second year baby greens. I personally like the concept!

I love the idea of a second year baby green at 2’9". I think that is what we are working towards. I think Swan Lake was offering the second year BG classes.

I really don’t care what I show in as long as it is not over 2’9". I just need to get more miles and unfortunately last year he went to a whopping 4(?) horse shows just to get out and about while everything (changes, distances, etc) is coming together for him.

Thanks for everyone’s help

I can totally sympathize! My guy had just started to get out and about, and was starting to pull it all together, when he managed to injure himself this fall in his stall overnight at his third show, and just like that, 2016 was done, and for 2017 we’ll be in need of the random 2’6/2’9" schooling division for a young horse who is basically starting over on showing but technically in his second year!

Madison -

Yes yes yes! Mine was more financial and not trying to spend the limited funds I have on missing a change behind or not getting a good distance in. He doesn’t need the time at the shows, he’s already quiet, but of course every experience for the young ones is important.

I guess that’s why they have the low’s, but in my area, the lows fill up a lot so its a long division. I guess it will make it that much more rewarding if hopefully one day we pull through a blue ribbon
