Baby Squirrels, did I make a really bad mistake?

Super that you were able to raise them!

I had a wonderful squirrel raising experience in college. It is a highlight of my college years, weird as that is. We found the little tyke under a tree – tiny, hairless, eyes shut. We were able to get to a pet store for some sort of formula and bottles/nipples. I had to pull an all-nighter anyway so I took the first overnight shift. My childhood was full of “saved” animals that inevitably died so I was resigned – but every half hour or so I would put a drop of the formula on the baby’s (tightly closed) mouth. I knew better than to forcefeed – some of those deaths in my childhood were undoubtedly attributable to “killing with kindness”… :frowning: But this little guy just lay there with the drop on his face until I or the bedding wiped it away.

Until… UNTIL… at 2:30 AM I put the drop on his lips and he smacked them, got the formula inside, and swallowed. And again! And again! By the time my friends woke up at 7 AM or so, he was holding the bottle in his front paws while he drank from it. Hard to describe what a thrill that was!

It was good timing with summer break – one of my friends, whose father was a wildlife biologist, took her and the squirrel home from school and as far as we knew the release was successful.

Be Proud ! You did a super job with the squirrels !

Bless you for helping them ~

Just up dating to say the squirrels were released over the week end. Hope they have long happy lives!

Wonderful! Thank you for caring for them!

Put your rat poison in a Tom Cat container, no squirrels, dogs or cats can get into those.
