Baby's First Big Show (Pin Oak) -- What Should I Know?

Fair statement, I would say.

I will say one interesting development I’ve seen in the last few years is that in addition to the red ribbon in the tail, I have seen horses with some sort of a red marker on the bridle. Which I am guessing means that the horse might react adversely to horses coming too close to him head-on.

This is what I have been told by a trainer-friend who sports one on a bonnet for one of hers.

I was never formally taught this, but deduced it from observation and relation to having formally been taught about the red ribbon.

So I would say a green ribbon isn’t a bad idea. But as also said, those who know would probably otherwise also make the connection, via observation

Hi Coffee! I too am an ammy in my late 20s with a youngish (coming 9) OTTB. We did our first unrated dressage and H/J shows last year and lived to tell the tale, which was our first and only goal.

I did put a red ribbon in my guy’s tail. I’ve never actually had him kick out but I don’t necessarily trust folks in the warmup or in busy flat classes to respect our space otherwise. I didn’t want to take the risk that he would get run up on while already being a bit wound up or overstimulated from the show environment and act out. It seemed to work.

Definitely second the suggestion to let people know you’re on a green youngster if you have the chance. In my experience, people are overwhelmingly willing to lend a hand, whether that’s buddying up or respecting your space. They also tend to give more grace if something does go sideways.

Good luck, have fun, and let us know how it goes!

If your horse’s mane has never been pulled, I would not do it for the first time at a show. Some horses hate it, some are ok, but i wouldn’t do something that could be unpleasant for him in a new busy setting. Talk to your trainer about tidying up the mane prior to show

Pin Oak can be a lot with the tents, indoor noise, etc.
I’d suggest lots of hand walks, hacks, and as much schooling time in ring & out that you need.
It will be super fun!

Outside of horse recommendation, my recommendation for you is OVER PACK & pack for EVERY season. I’ve never been so cold as 55 and rainy in Houston during a Pin Oak. Even the Northerners were saying it was too cold. Then the next day it was nearly 80.
