Badminton 2018

Any info on why Will Coleman retired after the runout? I have zero insight into what his thought process would have been. Could he be rerouting somewhere else? It seems like a Badminton completion would have been viewed positively re WEG-team selection–but maybe not, if he was out of contention for the top spots. I’m hoping someone will report on this, or he will post something. Sorry if this is an ignorant question.

Way too many horse falls IMO. Not my idea of a good horse-friendly 4*star course although a slight improvement from last year… Not sure it does any good to the sport in the eyes of the general public. Surely bad for the horses. Some solid class rounds ridden with true horsemanship: MJ, Lauren, Tom McEwen, Jonelle and a few others and some rather ruthless ones. Like one continuously whacking his tired horse all the way to the end but we know how “hungry” he is); another displaying (as usual) plain dangerous riding (has he got a death wish?).
2nd horse inspection should be interesting. I hope all horses recover well.

Dunno. Reminded me a lot of Hannah Sue Burnett last year, and she rerouted to Luhmulen.

Horse already in Europe, retired close to the start and Lehmulen is not too distant - and considered a softer option.

Alex Bragg’s horse sadly put down as a result of irreparably damaging ligament galloping between fences. Tribute on H&H: http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/news/redpath-ransom-put-down-badminton-2018-652034

Crap.

Fingers crossed no other horses suffered any (fatal) injuries :(. God, I’ll take Kentucky any time…

Tragic. I wonder if that was the long hold on course.

OT given official warning for over use of whip on Badders XC

Oliver Townend was given a warning about his overuse of the whip on both horses: http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/news/oliver-townend-whip-badminton-652036

That’s interesting to see re: OT. I didn’t catch the first ride, but there was an awful lot of flapping around on the second. On my small screen, however, it looked like quite a bit of waving the whip around near his leg without contact. Can’t rewatch until Monday apparently, but I’m glad the officials are watching out.

I made an edit to my previous post - maybe not as good a day for sport as it first seemed especially in light of what happened to Redpath Ransome.

I took a quick look at where the 11 eliminations occurred. This year, nobody was eliminated on refusals so all the Es were for rider and/or horse falls. From what I can tell, two of the 11 were at the Lake (9) on the log in (both horse falls), one more at 9B or C (Madeline Backus, rider), two were at the Vicarage Vee (22) (one rider, one horse), two were at the out of the Eclipse Pond (18B) (one horse, ore rider). There were three more horse falls at different fences: Hildon Water (20), Joules Corners (26), and Bullfinch (28). There was one more rider fall at the BHS table (27).

The following was a quote from Eric Winter in an article from USEA:
Course-designer, Eric Winter, said: “I was happy with how today panned out. I didn’t expect riders to go to the left of the ropes coming out of the lake and angle the straight route c element – they beat me there – but otherwise the fences generally rode as I hoped they would.”

Where and when are the replays?

Euro prince’s fall was super weird. He was jumping like his tail was on fire and overjumping everything but in a very forward not sticky way prior to the bullfinch. The camera only showed the backside so you couldn’t see the takeoff but looked like he just plowed into it and couldn’t get the landing gear engaged. Very sad as they were having a "cracking"round as the announcers said.

This page says the video will be available on Monday:

I’m not sure if the paid access has anything sooner.

EN’s report says Oliver got a yellow card. I wonder which report (card or warning) is accurate.

I have only seen a few rounds as I was it showing today, but oh man I am so proud of Selena!!! I don’t think she needs to worry about tomorrow, she is Canada’s strongest team by a mile.

MJ again just a master and his horse jumping amazing with a few hiccups here. I think Sam is legend just an incredible horse.

Ollie Townend hit his horse incessantly at the end of the course. I knew he would get a warning I was hoping for a yellow card. There is no excuse when you watch MJ and how he can get Sam around in good time and the comparison. Winning should not come at a cost of horses comfort.

Devastated a horse had died.

Its hard to love eventing right now for me.
