Barbaro Euthanized After Lengthy Battle

‘It was goiong to be difficult for him to go on without pain, co-owner says’

PHILADELPHIA - Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was euthanized Monday after complications from his breakdown at the Preakness last May.“We just reached a point where it was going to be difficult for him to go on without pain,” co-owner Roy Jackson said. “It was the right decision, it was the right thing to do. We said all along if there was a situation where it would become more difficult for him then it would be time.”
Roy and Gretchen Jackson were with Barbaro on Monday morning, with the owners making the decision in consultation with chief surgeon Dean Richardson.
It was a series of complications, including laminitis in the left rear hoof and a recent abscess in the right rear hoof, that proved to be too much for the gallant colt, whose breakdown brought an outpouring of support across the country.
“I would say thank you for everything, and all your thoughts and prayers over the last eight months or so,” Jackson said to Barbaro’s fans.

For the complete story, see the link above

Rest in peace and may you gallop through green fields beating everyone who dares to race with you. We sent one of our wonderful boys over the bridge yesterday and I’m sure he’s there to welcome you.

Best wishes to the Jacksons, Michael, and everyone connected to Barbaro. It was an honor to watch him run.

Update 1403: Barbaro was euthanized, at about 10:30 am this morning. Mike Jensen spoke with Mrs. Jackson.
Mr. and Mrs. Jackson and Dr. Richardson were all in attendance.
Thanks, Alex

I was hoping to not have to read this. Godspeed this wonderful horse. To all those who worked so diligently to save him - thank you, you are my heroes. I still believe it’s better to try and fail than to not try at all.

RIP Barbaro…

Now its time to ease your pain
Nothing for you done in vain

Your life like your speed much to fast
Take your place with legands past

The starting gate opens one last time
Run my friend leave this world behind

RIP Big B. My heart goes out to all involved.
VB thank you for keeping us informed from the very start

So many thanks to VB for the reports. Blessings to the Jacksons, Dr Dean, Michael Matz, Edgar Prado for their strength, and for doing all they could for this magnificent animal.

An image came to me when I heard the news.

As his halter was removed at the gate, Bobby bucked a huge happy buck, let out a trumpet of triumph, and galloped off across the green turf, his call answered by all those who were awaiting his arrival.

RIP, Barbaro.

I’m so sad about this. Godspeed, buddy…

I can only hope that Barbaro’s story will help us to understand horses better, so that we can help them better in the future.

Thank God its all over for him finally. It is a pitifully horrible shame he was made to suffer this long. Godspeed to this poor animal. It absolutely breaks my heart and I’m sitting here in tears. Tears of joy that he doesn’t have to face another single minute of pain. It should have been done many months ago.

That makes me so sad. I was thinking about how hard it must have been for them at the Eclipse Awards accepting all those awards and knowing that he was not out of the woods yet. They have had some very difficult decisions that are painful even outside of the public eye, and they have handled them gracefully. Great people, all of them. I’m so sorry.

Thank God! He is now pain free and free to run like he was born to do.

R.I.P Barbaro!

You MUST go to www.TimWoolleyRacing.com and look at the photo of B with Dr. R and Edgar! What a great picture and a wonderful memory.

I’m so sad over this news. To the whole Barbaro team, The Jacksons, Dr. Richardson and everyone who laid their hands on this magnificent animal my sincere condolences and prayers.

And to the much beloved Barbaro, may you gallop the fields of heaven with speed and grace and remain strong in spirit as you were in life.

:frowning:
He was so close not long ago to overcoming this. There is not a person alive that can deny the courage this horse showed and the inspiration he has given to everyone. I think the owners and vets also showed great conviction amongst a TON of criticism and deserve praise for what they did for this horse and horses in the future that will unfortunately have severe injuries as well. From this experience, hopefully more will be able to be saved and more people will give injured racehorses a shot at life.

I think Barbaro gave everyone a chance to learn from him in one way or another…
wish it could have had a different ending though.

Does anyone know when the press conference is? I still want to hear what is said…

Godspeed Barbaro. We’ve lost a true champion.

Thank you to all that brought us updates.
