Barbaro keeps fighting

Kentucky Derby winnner Barbaro’s chances of making a full recovery from a shattered leg have been described as ‘very poor’ but the fight still continues to save the life of the valuable three-year-old colt.
While his shattered right hind leg is recovering well from surgery, his vet - Dr Dean Richardson - was concerned by laminitis, which occurs in a horse’s limb due to uneven weight distribution, in the horse’s other hind leg.
Barbaro had casts changed on his hind legs on Monday and while there were concerns over whether the colt will ever be able to walk properly again, Richardson was happy with how the colt’s hoof was recovering.
“It looked as healthy as you could have expected it to look. I was very pleased,” he said.

“If you’re not used to looking at that sort of thing, it might not look healthy.”
However, Barbaro’s recovery is still talked about in terms of months rather than days.
“He has a long, long way to go,” Richardson said.
“I’d be laughed out of the profession if I said this horse’s prognosis is anything but poor."
“Every day I’m encouraged.”
“No one wants to quit on this horse. No one wants him to suffer.”
