Barbaro ~ America's Horse

Barbaro keeps fighting

Kentucky Derby winnner Barbaro’s chances of making a full recovery from a shattered leg have been described as ‘very poor’ but the fight still continues to save the life of the valuable three-year-old colt.

While his shattered right hind leg is recovering well from surgery, his vet - Dr Dean Richardson - was concerned by laminitis, which occurs in a horse’s limb due to uneven weight distribution, in the horse’s other hind leg.

Barbaro had casts changed on his hind legs on Monday and while there were concerns over whether the colt will ever be able to walk properly again, Richardson was happy with how the colt’s hoof was recovering.

“It looked as healthy as you could have expected it to look. I was very pleased,” he said.

“If you’re not used to looking at that sort of thing, it might not look healthy.”

However, Barbaro’s recovery is still talked about in terms of months rather than days.

“He has a long, long way to go,” Richardson said.

“I’d be laughed out of the profession if I said this horse’s prognosis is anything but poor."

“Every day I’m encouraged.”

“No one wants to quit on this horse. No one wants him to suffer.”

After reading Nureyev’s story and Hoist the flag you have to believe that it is possible. The updates are important, Thank you VB, just to know there is no change for the worse… Keep on truckin’ Barbaro!!!

This is s most AMAZING horse with a most AMAZING will to live!! He should be an inspiration to all!! I pray for his recovery!! If he makes it through this, it will truly be a miracle!! I don’t know of ANY horse, much less a 3yr old TB, who would be able to put up with all of this and still be soo bright and happy!! Thanx VB for all the updates! Keep 'em coming!!

Shoot! Mr Fancy would be a basket case by this time, and he’s supposed to be a sentient being. This horse is unbelievable!

If y’all haven’t seen this video of Sabina being interviewed and showing her Barbaro pics on NBC 10, it is WELL worth the watch. I almost didn’t bother to watch it, but she is obviously a horse person and knows what she’s looking at, and gives some great insights into how well B. is really handling this!

Keep boinging Bobby!!

Don’t forget to keep the candles lit on the http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/…l=eng&gi=barba
site. They only stay lit for 48 hours.

I just lit a few more, but we have lost about 150…

lit another one!

I just lit quite a few. Sending strong power of good recovery his way with each one.

And VB, thanks so much for this. I hope everyone recognizes the effort it takes you to do this so often, when you have your own busy barn to run.

You are one in a million, and COTH is lucky to have you taking the time to do this. Thank you. xxoo

Me Toooo!!

VB- another one who thanks you. And, well said Riggs.

Just in from Alex:

Update 287: Just returned from The Whip. We had a great turn out, and will let you know more tomorrow. More importantly, Kathy Anderson visited Barbaro on her way to The Whip (about 7 pm) and reported he remains comfortable, so another good day for Bobby.

And dont forget the veterinary personnel! They deserve as much chocolate as they can eat!

Stopped at Prizzio’s for a quick bite tonight after 5 pm and someone was asking about help for giving his horse bute and the owner said call Kathy Anderson, she’s the best vet around. I told him to crush the bute and blend it with some peanut butter, make balls, drop into bag of powdered sugar so it’s not sticky and I promise the horse will love it. You could even mix it with some sweet feed if you like the the PB will make it sticky and yummy at the same time.

You should stop at Prizzio’s, they have all the newspapers with Barbaro all over the place.

how does smarty do it?

How does smarty keep up [on everything going on in the:confused: world; Does he watch CNN?LOL

Thanks to Alex & Tim~

Update 289: Barbaro had another comfortable night last night (thursday). As I was jogging around the track, I passed Michael Matz jogging the other way on Messaging. He had just heard from Dean Richardson.
updated friday 7:00am
Update 288: The following is a lovely video of Barbaro’s baby brother. He is cute! As noted in the video he has a mind of his own, he is correct and strong, and is two to three weeks away from being weaned.

VB - thanks for the update.

just lit a couple more. Thank you VB, and well said Riggs.
re the GWB comment, if he actually said that, my estimation of the man just went up.
I pray we see him eat that 10 gallon hat.

Thanks VB.

the baby brother is really cute, looks a bit like Barbaro. He has a great deal to live up to.

Prayers for Barbaro.
