Barefoot treeless saddles?

Cute horse! You must a lot younger than me, because no way could I get on your horse without a mounting block!

I have a barefoot Cheyenne, and I love it. It’s beyond comfortable, and my mare seems to like it [she lets me know when she is hurting from a saddle].

I do use a breast collar and a crupper, but I can mount without too much difficulties. I normally have issues when I forget to check her girth before mounting [she likes to puff herself up], and then the saddle will roll. You do learn to mount quickly with treeless saddles, however. You actually should be able to mount a horse without your girth being fastened, if you mount “correctly”.

Either way, I love it. I use a dixie midnight pad and a tolkat woolback with mine, mainly because my skito pads were from my other horse and she needed a built up pad whereas this mare does NOT need the extra panels up front.

Here is my setup:

I do not find that it puts me in too bad of a position, and I feel very very secure in this saddle.[/QUOTE]

This is soooo belated, but your setup looks like my old one did, Jess. Back when I had a Barefoot.

my friend has one that she swears by and won’t ride in anything else. She leased my TB mare to do endurance on on season and said that she had a problem getting the big trot out of her that I always got out on the trail. This mare is super wide for a TB but she has withers, though not much of any. We figured out that she didn’t like the wither clearance issues. Put her in any treed saddle, even if it isn’t a good fit for her back, and she is endurance horse extrodinaire.

Just a perfect illustration
no treeless saddles will work for every horse, however that doesn’t mean that there isn’t another type of treeless saddle that WILL work for this horse. There are lots of reasons why it might not have worked for that particular horse. What pad was used? Was care taken to make sure that there was enough spinal clearance? What is the horses shape? Does she have a prominent spine? How much did the rider weigh? If she was a heavier person were the inserts in the pad dense enough to maintain the clearance? The barefoots have hard pommel and cantle inserts that can be too tight on certain horses. The solid insert can be removed and the pommel restuffed with something else. Or another brand of treeless saddle might work better. There are too many variables to just say this horse didn’t like the barefoot saddle and it doesn’t work when with a little tinkering it might have worked perfectly.
