I have started putting shavings in the back of the trailer only, to avoid slipping- after my mare started scrambling. She has dramatically cut down on the scrambling perhaps the shavings helped? We also removed the center divider of two horse straight load and drive at a snails pace (well a bit faster but pretty damn slow).
We always use bagged shavings for our trailer (the ones we use in the barn are more sawdust-y) and don’t have a problem with them flying around. Our 3 horse angle haul has drop down windows by their heads and slide windows with screens by their butts, plus roof vents.
I always trailer with shavings. Just make sure they are shavings not more or less sawdust.
I like to use shavings I don’t end up with dust flying around because I use the large flake many people seem to say the shavings need to be taken out if I scoop out the urine-soaked shavings and the manure shavings and leave good shavings on the mat is that okay I can’t see there being any harm to the mats
I need to start using something, but I have a two horse straight load with wood floors under the mats and I could see shavings being a nightmare trying to clean out…really tempted to try straw, I never would have though about that.
I never much worried about pee and poo in a trailer, because the horse’s legs were wrapped. Shavings fly about (I had a stock trailer) and straw doesn’t absorb much anyhow. We’d mostly go empty. But we mostly didn’t trailer far, either. (and always used flymasks).
